Yeah, that's pretty annoying.

I just use a TNT cheat when that happens.

Yes it happens regularly. Wait til you get almost through the last maze and run out of gas. Ever had trouble finding enough platinum to even make it to that maze? One time I couldn't find enough copper. However, it is worth the two or three failed attempts to get the drill.
