Or at least the first Palm Island. And by completed I mean you can actually live in it.
I heard all the homes in the first palm sold out almost instantly. How long do you think they can keep that gravy train rolling?

For the sad saps who don't know wtf Dubai is, well you suck. It's only the biggest engineering project in the world. Basically The country of Dubai made some calcualtions and figured out they only have about 16 years left of oil to pump. After that, their economy all the wealth from the palace will go away because that's where all their money comes from. So instead of being a lazy ass, the crown prince was smart. He decided to use the bulk of the current oil money to finace the contrution of this GIGANTIC man-made island in the shape of a Palm Tree and sell houses there. He would also transform Dubai City in to a giant metropolis of hotels, gormet restaurants, attractions and huge beaches so that they can get their economy off of oil and into tourism.

They stated just before 2000 (I think) and now they're almost done with the first island and the crown prince is happy with it, he commisioned two more islands (each bigger than it's predecessor) and World Island. It's easily the greatest engineering feat the world has seen. For more in depth info check this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dubai) and preferably this (http://www.ssqq.com/archive/vinlin23dubai.htm).

There was a thing about this on the history channel. Man, if only George Bush had as much of a plan for our economy as he does.

Woah! Really? This project started in 2000, as far as we know, and it's being finished in only 8 years? Wonder how many workers they have...

Dubia = teh rocks.

well something like that. and they have a ####load of workers and some of the worlds top engineers. every now and then there's a special on it on the discovery channel (or I guess history channel too, accroding to coolguy). It's a pretty badass thing they're building.

Too bad the sea is just going to wash all of the dirt away. I don't see the island surviving that long >_>

acording to the discovery channel special, they already thought of that.
they solved it in a couple of ways. for one, there is a huge ring around the island made large rocks and it's basically a breakwater so the waves don't com crashing down on the islands.
then they heavily compressed all of the sand on the islands so that they can withstand the huge load of the building and people and stuff.

Think about that for a second. If the sea was going to wash the island, then engineers would have thought of it. Also, most of Palm Island is supposed to be residential, I heard. So, if enough dirt washes away, that means a land-slide. Ploosh! Hundreds of homes into the sea! (Well, depending on the rate of erosion)

What do you want from me?

For the first 7-star hotel, you have to pay $750 just to have a LOOK. Prices are about $2000-$5000 a night.

No, it really IS that great, apparently. If slavery were allowed, they'd probably give you two dozen servants to tend to your every need and more.

The houses were horribly built, so I've heard. What they paid for the actual construction of the various islands was saved on construction of the houses, so now they've got a bunch of poorly built houses made by underqualified construction workers that are threatening to fall apart (the houses, not the workers >_>)

Yeah, and I don't think they would want any more, when there's about 10 projects to build 6-star hotels...
