y do we need to activate our accounts

on some websites u have to put ur email in and then get sent an email with acount activation. why dont they just automatically activate ur acount? my friend said its legal reasons but not all sites do it so y does this 1 and other sites do it. i nearly didnt sign up on this site coz it had account activation, i wasnt gonna bother

I'm almost positive it is for other reasons aside from the following, but in my eyes, it is for people who care. If we have people signing up for no reason, it will only continue to slow down the boards and bring careless members to our forums. I'd rather have 300,000 people that cared enough about posting or what not to activate their account than have double that amount of people signing up solely for the heck of it.

The email validation is there to stop people from making a program that just calls the New Member script on the server with random names endlessly. We don't want millions of fake accounts clogging up the server.

Not only does it require people who actually give a hoot to bother joining, but it has a larger purpose. There's a reason why it tells you to provide a real email adress. They want to be able to contact you or have some way of knowing who you are, so that not just anybody can come in and cause trouble and then just go off and change the email adress.
