Whois

For those of you who don't know what Whois means, it's basically a list of IP adresses and this right here http://www.danasoft.com/sig/.jpg.

If you can see your IP address then right it down and go to http://www.whatismyipaddress.com (http://www.whatismyipaddress.com/) click on "lookup IP" and type it in and you can see mutiple pages of your information.

Now why doesn't ISP servers protect you from this? I personally think it's because they don't really care about the buyer. Just as long as they can sell their stuff.

Hmm. Isn't there something called Xwhois that can find somebody's name and personal information from their ip address?

Funny, I thought I was running Firefox.
Conspiracy.

Whois, kind of reminds me of a certain T.V. show but I don't remember the name of it, or it might be my imagination.

It didn't show any more information than I already have listed on this forum. It said, Ellicott City, MD, then my coordinates. It didn't list my name, street address, or even my postal code. Big deal.

Haha, I don't live in a city, so it chose a city about 50 miles away.

... You've obviously not even the slightest idea what you're talking about.

A whois is not a list of IP addresses. IP addresses have nothing to do with a whois whatsoever. A whois query only exists for domain names. The site you linked to approximates geologic location using the subnet of your ISP. Each ISP is assigned a certain range of IPs. Every ISP allocates IPs based on location. The site you linked to has a table of IP ranges and approximate locations. That's it. No whois involved.

This is a whois lookup.

If an ISP protected your IP address, you'd never be able to do anything online. Your IP address is what tells a server where to send data. It's like a house address for your computer. Protecting your IP address would be like taking out your house's mailbox.

Learn what you're talking about before you make a topic about it.

At least wiki it.

However, don't some ISP's have transparent proxies for their customers? Although it's not protected, that's some layer of security to get past IP lookups.

Also, I've always been curious, do you pronounce it 'Who is', or is there some other way?

I just say "Who is" quickly.

Thank you.

I can tell that sites are using ISP subnets when I see links talking about "Meeting Hot Girls from Puente." Puente is my local ISP subnet city, but I live in a far different city. Occasionally it switches from Puente to another city, I forgot which one.

However, don't some ISP's have transparent proxies for their customers? Although it's not protected, that's some layer of security to get past IP lookups.AOL uses common proxies, which is problematic for us moderators -- because there are literally 20 different users attributed to the same IP. Luckily, the moderator panel tells us the ISP is "proxy.AOL.net," so we don't multi-ban all of them.

Imagine that, in order to download things, teh internetz needs to know where you are!

Holy ####. Anyone who sends me a letter knows my address. Why won't the post office protect meeeeeeeeee!?

To sum it all up.
