View Full Version : Stereotypes

Danielle

It is so funny sometimes the kinds of stereotypes hear about or are placed upon you.

I, for instance, live in Oklahoma. My English teacher is a writer and his publisher is in New York. His publisher actually asked him if we have internet down here yet. I've had other people ask me if we live in teepees or even have cable yet. It is so funny. They think just because it is in the South we are a bunch of hicks who have no technology.

So what kind of stereotypes do you face?

crusty
02-28-2005, 04:58 PM
Just because my friends skateboard, and I have done it once, I'm called a "skater", "punk", or "skater-fag".

It's kind of stupid, but I just deal with it...

moonm325

Well, I am a white boy in a black neiborhood, so naturally, everybody thinks I am rich.

People have also asked me how many cows I own. =P

Danielle
02-28-2005, 05:01 PM
Hey, wow! I've been asked that too. Also how big my farm is. Which I don't own a farm, just to clarify.

Yeah, some small kid at school who is a loser thought I was a weakling because I am 6'3" , and weigh only 155, and look weak. I just showed him my bicep, and the kid was running. There are many more when you are that tall.

OFFTOPIC- so that is where you live Danielle? Did you jump the gun on the Land Rush? And did you ever have a snow day?

Danielle
02-28-2005, 05:06 PM
No, I didn't jump the gun on the land rush. Yes, I've had several snow days. We actually had 6 inches of snow this year at one point.

moonm325
02-28-2005, 05:07 PM
Lol, here in Austin, the entire city shuts down for like 1 inch of snow, cuz we only see snow like once every 5 years. =)

I know I'm lucky.

Shadow Crest
02-28-2005, 05:08 PM
probably no snowplows, right? I had 18 inches one day, 18 INCHES, and school wasn't cancelled or delayed. (of course almost everyone was late that day...)

Rambo
02-28-2005, 05:11 PM
I must say, regrettably, that without stereotypes modern comedy would cease to be.

Many people have incorrectly assumed that since I have nice computer and other nice belongings that I am "rich". Also, people think that I live the life of a vicious bat, feeding off of the blood of others who I hunt at night and then sleeping all day. In the time when I am not hunting or sleeping, in their eyes, I feel and satisfy my insatiable appetite for the Internet.

Sad thing is, all but the "rich" part is true. :)

Shadow Crest
02-28-2005, 05:13 PM
ah, I guess you are right.

Another one- people think I am dumb- dumb as a rock, and I am taking AP Chem in 10th grade, and planning on taking all AP courses or preps next year.

Hex
02-28-2005, 05:15 PM
um, the only stereotype i have is that because i am skinny, people think i am anorexic, which im not...

the reason im skinny is because i also 6' 4" and i still in my first growth period, im supposed to have 2-3.

Shadow Crest
02-28-2005, 05:16 PM
yeah, I also have about 2 more inches before I max out.

Well, since I am Canadian, there is the whole igloo and snowmobile thing, which I own neither of. People think since I am a punk kid, that I smoke pot, I don't... People also think since I have a bank card and some nice commodities that I am rich. Not rich, middle class, plus I have a job.

Shadow Crest

THAT'S WHO IT WAS!
*sighs of relief*

Anyway; steroetypes are rather common where I come from.

-igloos
-year round snow
-ever seen rain?
-does it go above 0?
-no tv
-no indoor plumbing
-beaver tails
-killer moose in ottawa
-how often we go ice fishing
-eh eh eh eh eh eh eh eh eh
^relate to everyone.^

And then we have the more specific stereotypes.

-all old ladies steal geography books while on rollerblades
-anyone who worked at camco smokes/"pervert"
-girls are either ******, ******** or nerds.
-boys are either ****, ***, punks, "pot heads", or nerds.

Shadow Crest
02-28-2005, 06:01 PM
I knew you were (duh, no offense), I pieced together that Kerry was one, but I didn't know about the other two.

Another one- people think I like Classical music, and I really like Metal (Pantera, Korn, and Killswitch Engage, not too much of the Death Metal stuff)

Which brings around another point- all these Goth kids at school ruined it. I mean that I can't admit to liking metal. Otherwise, they begin thinking that I am part-goth (I am NOT). Also, I have a friend that is goth, and he is very separate from them in many ways, and would be smart, but all the drugs ruined him. These things put bad images on people.

Also, I don't have a problem with jocks, because they make sure that my fries are piping hot, and that the pizza I ordered gets safely to my door. (Thanks Maddox)

OMG, Kerry's a woman? I could have never known by looking at her avatar. Also, looking through the multitude of pictures she posts on the boards of him(her?)self, I'm just getting more and more confused.

Not much stereo-typing here. I would be stereo-typed if I was african-american, though. People who insult them, however, usually get a "j00 can't beat nobod.", honestly.

Oh, and about Stereo Types, I'm Canadian so I say aboot and eh and have some sort of canadian accent. I live in an igloo and it's always freezing cold here. Mounties are everywhere(I've never seen a mounty in my life). There's a whole lot of crap. My dad actually went down to texas for a work trip, and the people were asking him about his igloo. 'So, which soccer team u play for?'
'I bet u're freezing in this 90 degree heat.'

But I have so many types of friends I can hit them right back with something of my own. I have plenty of fat jokes, Bhudist jokes, lesbian jokes, black jokes, and German jokes to last me a long time.

We've had three snowdays in the last four hours.

Seriously.

I like our lake effect snow. It gives us nice juicy snowdays (Like the one I'm hoping for tomorrow so I don't have to write that stupid essay for Health).

On to stereotypes.

People think that because they consider my house big and the fact that we own two lots and live in a nice part of the city that we're rich. (And because I don't dress like a punk/goth/emo/omgiLuvSum41theresoooPUNK!) And people outside of my school think I have a funkae accent and therefor I'm from another country. Also because I have a hook hand, peg leg, and patch eye I muuust be a pirate. The list goes on and on...

Ah; Canada. See at least America knew they were coming.
Our anthem is like oooooh, Canada...those guys. Penguiners right?

Canada is the victim of most untrue stereotypes. We do not run away. We're smart enought to NOT attack someone in the first place.

I wonder just how many people from America have asked me if my penguins are being well fed.

Canada is a land of change. We go from a murderer/jibberishian prime minister to a financial goat.

An interesting topic, one worthy of deep discussion.

I too, live in the land of Okie’s, and have had the same idiotic questions asked of me from folks on “The Coasts” those of us who live in ‘flyover’ land get that all the time. And since I live in a small town >4000, it gets a lot worse from the guys at my Publisher in New Yawk City. I had one actually ask me if we still had trouble with Indians out here, seriously. Since I’m part Cherokee/Apache I told him we didn’t. Unless some smart - *** Yankee tenderfoot riled us up.

And, since I have been fortunate enough to have visited a number of places outside the US have heard silly questions from there about America also.

To be honest, I’ve asked my share of stereotyped questions. And been corrected rather quickly on occasion. As I should have been.

I’ve learned through the internet. most people on this rather mundane mudball circling an average star in an unspectacular galaxy that we are all a lot more alike than not. We go to work to try and support our family and hope our children have a better life than we did.

I live in Florida or as of the 2000 election renaming Flori-duh. I've had people think i'm some sorta idiot because I live in the south. I shoot rifles and come from (on my dad's side) a TON of rednecks. Yet they stand speechless when you ask them about their computer configuration while you try to help them on tech support.

I'm from Alaska. People think we live in igloos...I've had people ask that...and not jokingly. And I normally reply, "Yes, I've got the computer plugged into a wall of ice." I hate stereotyping. Anyone who has ever been to Alaska knows we're not a bunch of eskimos sitting around an ice hole talking of the day when the white man came and took our oil :P . In fact, I don't even know any Eskimo-ians. I was born in Alaska, but my Mom is from California and my Dad is from Texas.

That one too, to me hockey is the most idiotic sport ever.

Leave our country!! Now!

I mean it.

You know you have to make those days up in the summer, don't you?

I laugh at you *laughs*

Hmm...No?

yeah, our enemy school is all boy, so we accuse them as well.

Hahaha, they used to do that. But then we completely owned them in football, basketball, lacrosse, football, and football, and swimmin, and football again.

On swimming, here is our state record since 1970--- 70-79 81-84 90-97 99-05

We own Ohio

It is not "Lacrosse". It's "crosse". La = the in french. Say it : The crosse. Congrats.

I'm a 'victim' of all the Canadian stereotypes, but smart people say that jokingly and dumb people can't defend their position.

I get the 'must be over 25' thing on the internet too, because I'm smart and mature and a programmer.

I don't get that. Usually I act rather stupid online (not on forums), so people can know my age. It's a lot better, since it ends the questions.

I don't think there ARE any "Eskimos" in Alaska. They're Inuits now, Eskimo is an outdated term.

I was actually conisdering starting a thread on this... anyway. I'm stereotyped (living in New Jersey) people think my backyard is a trash dump, and theres electic lines all over the place. So maybe we have electrical lines everywhere... but no trash. We just burn our (and New York City's) trash. Screw the o-zone. As far as what kind of person I am. I am thought of to be a kid that smiles a lot. I don't know why I do. Maybe because my crazy parents make me? I seem to have more hate in me than people think. I get mad a lot, and sometimes a little depressed at the end of the day. Whatever. Stereo-typers suck.

Well as you can tell by my name I'm Italian. My Great grandfather came from Italy my dad got his first name from him and I got my whole name from my father. Anyways, I've actually been precived as a hoodlum/law-breaker a couple of times by a couple people in my class before. Now my friends just joke about it now, saying junk like im in the mafia, I know they are joking around (Its quite funny actually) so I dont mind, but sometimes people can be so ignorant.

I get the canadian stereotype thing all the time too.
I also get stereotyped because I'm part german.
Losta people in my school have called me anazi and a hitler lover.
I laugh cause I know they're joking but it can get annoying sometimes.

Well what people don't understand is that the nazis lost power a long time ago. They think they're over there doing business with their lovely fellow countries. -_- It's not like the whole country hated the world, they were just forced to.
