Sorry, if this is considered a stupid question but I was wondering how long it takes of inactivity to become inactive

Actually... It does become inactive.
Mine became inactive after like 2-3 months of not being on, so I had to make a new username.

well, I was away for a loong time with my old account andc I became active again but there's no way for me to tell how long I was gone.

I was once away for nearly 6 hours. :shock: It was horrible and I will never do it again.

well, I was gone for more. I made an account for motherload. (yes I know I was one of those people) but then I checked out the forums and was like "Hey, this is pretty cool" So I tried to log on with my old account but failed. No big diff seeing as I had nothing with my old name but I was gone a looong tiime

It's becouse you had to log on with your E-mail to join the forums. Without that you can only play ML, trust me, I have tried.
