Thats two words? And I'm sure theres some medical term longer.

There is no longest german word. Due to our grammar, compound words are written together. So "meat production" would be Fleischproduktion.

So technically, you could attach a word at the end of Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübert ragungsgesetz that makes half-way sense, and you'd have a longer word.

Or you could just take an infinitely long number and write it out.

Last year when I did german my teacher told us the longest word, I can't remember what it was though. It could be the one you've done.

-_-

Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübert ragungsgesetzbeauftragter would be a longer word. Translated it would be the commissionary in charge of the Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübert ragungsgesetz.

FYI: The translation would be:

"beef labeling regulation & delegation of supervision law"

This was a 1999 German Word of the Year (http://german.about.com/library/blwortjahr98-01.htm), and it also won a special award as the longest German word for that year. It refers to a "law for regulating the labeling of beef" - all in one word, which is why it is so long. German also likes abbreviations (http://german.about.com/library/blabbrev.htm), and this word has one: ReÜAÜG.

about.com says
Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän, which in English becomes four words: "Danube steamship company captain."

denacioust
01-14-2007, 08:28 AM
Obviously its not since it can be elongated to Vice Captain, at least.

DarkReality
01-14-2007, 02:28 PM
Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitänsgesellsc haftsmitgliedsregister would be "member index of the association of Danube steamship company captains"

I win. For now >_>

Donaudampfschiffahrtselektrizitätenhauptbetriebswe rk-
bauunterbeamtengessellschaft (one word, no hyphen)
(die, 80 letters) "association of subordinate officials of the head office management of the Danube steamboat electrical services" (the name of a pre-war club in Vienna) - Not really useful, this word is more of a desperate attempt to lengthen the word below.

Is german the hardest language to learn?

denacioust

No. German is incredibly easy to learn. Of my experience of it anyway.

DarkReality

You know english. English has the strangest and most inconsistent grammar I know of. So no, german shouldn't be a problem. It's extremely systematic, actually. Once you get past our pronounciation, which is quite different that english pronounciations of syllables.

denacioust
03-19-2007, 12:44 PM
I've always found the pronunciation in German easy. Correct usage of grammar is my main problem, inthat the way some string of words may make sense in English their German counterparts will not.

The only trouble I have with German is the whole preposition system. With the accusative and dative stuff. I know it makes sense but I always forget it.

Anyway, you could always write out an incredibly long number as a word then add more digits for inifinity.

denacioust
03-19-2007, 02:20 PM
Aus Bei Gegenuber Mit Nach Seit Von Zu are the...Dative? ones...

And then FUDGEBOW for Accusative.

Blazeofspikes

denacioust
03-19-2007, 04:31 PM
Those are prepositions which when you use put the sentence into the Dative case...Ich fahre mit dem rad

Isn't English a hard language for foreigners to learn?
Very. Much harder than it is for us to read that scribbly japanese writing.
The english language consists of multiple languages, A lot of words come from different languages. So foreigners have to learn other languages to understand english.

Or you could just take an infinitely long number and write it out.

There would be spaces in that. Unless it's different in German, which I know nothing about.

and there's an exception to every rule. I before E. EXCEPTION: after C. EXCEPTION: weird.
It's only Germanic because of the structure, the words and sounds for the letters are a mess.
