Meh, tool assisted videos...
They play the game at around 1/30th the speed, then speed the video back up to normal speed. That's how they have such good reaction speed and can press buttons so fast.
It doesn't take skill so much as it takes a lot of patience.

Boring. I've seen a 16:30 Time Attack.

Yeah, they play it really slow, and they play it until they get every little part perfectly. They can simply rewind and start again. It just shows how fast somebody who made no mistakes, and knew how to exploit every glitch played. I'm really impressed with his Bowser in the Dark World performance.
Alright. I officially refuse to believe Super Mario World in 5:14 or whatever.

He's pretty blatantly running straight into a Pirhanna Plant, no? I didn't change that screenshot. Go to 2:28 in that video, and watch Mario where he should have died. Beware of Bull####.

5:05 time attack on the original Mario. It is from the speed demo archive, so I wouldn't doubt a tool assist, but I don't think their would be any "real" mods/hacks/whatever.

This was definitley tool assisted. How could they get that onto the computer? Also if you look closely they hit enemies a lot and nothing happens.

1) Some of the earlier games have weird collisiion detection. I wouldn't be surprised if that was an actual glitch that you can find in the cartridge.
2) Even TAS's are pretty impressive, although definitely not as good as a normal run.
3) I'm almost positive sdkess (5'05" Mario 1) only does normal (non tool-assisted) speedruns. Please also see his site (http://www.vortiginous.com) here.

Speed Demos Archive should be all non-tool-assisted, unless otherwise noted.
