The Opera browser test version for Wii came out today, so naturally I've been testing it's Flash capabilities. I'm quite interested in making games for this control method, and I figure some of you might be as well. I did a few tests on the player; here's what I've found:
The Wii runs a custom Flash Player - the version ID is Wii 7.0.70.0 (currently). SWF files for version 8 and up don't work.
Flash runs noticeably slower on Wii, especially with gradients and alpha changes.
On my TV (someone please test this on their TV) the screen is 800x500.
When zoomed in, the screen focuses on a 530x330 area.
I used the Arial font for the following tests:
Basically unreadable at the default 12pt size.
Readable at 18pt.
Very readable around 24pt.
While zoomed in:
Barely readable at the default 12pt size.
Readable at 14pt.
Easily readable at 16pt.
If anyone wants to use my test file, you can find it at http://rpi.edu/~genglc/wii
or http://rpi.edu/~genglc/wii/wii_size_test.swf
I just noticed that loading the file directly (linking right to the swf) seems to work nicely, filling the screen and all. I'll test this out.
