The Opera browser test version for Wii came out today, so naturally I've been testing it's Flash capabilities. I'm quite interested in making games for this control method, and I figure some of you might be as well. I did a few tests on the player; here's what I've found:

The Wii runs a custom Flash Player - the version ID is Wii 7.0.70.0 (currently). SWF files for version 8 and up don't work.

Flash runs noticeably slower on Wii, especially with gradients and alpha changes.

On my TV (someone please test this on their TV) the screen is 800x500.

When zoomed in, the screen focuses on a 530x330 area.

I used the Arial font for the following tests:
Basically unreadable at the default 12pt size.
Readable at 18pt.
Very readable around 24pt.

While zoomed in:
Barely readable at the default 12pt size.
Readable at 14pt.
Easily readable at 16pt.

If anyone wants to use my test file, you can find it at http://rpi.edu/~genglc/wii
or http://rpi.edu/~genglc/wii/wii_size_test.swf

I just noticed that loading the file directly (linking right to the swf) seems to work nicely, filling the screen and all. I'll test this out.

yeah I'm going to be toying with this as well.
TBC seemed to pretty much answer the questions I was going to research myself, but if I find anyhting useful I'll put it up.

Im sure Opera is already working on it.
They know how flash is getting more and more popular for nearly every big site now.

alright, new information.
TBC noted how flash was a bit slower on the wii. So I tested the quality levels to see if they're noticable or not. I figure the lower the quality, the faster it'll go.

This is based on quality level. I used this to test it. http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a354/stalker000/qualitytest.swf

Normal view:
High Quality: Looks good... obviously.
Medium Quality: Looks good. Almost no difference at all. (recomended)
Low Quality: Looks decent. There is an obvious difference and you can make out the imperfectoins.

Zoomed in:
High: Needless to say, good. (recomended)
Medium: Easier to make out the imperfections. Looks decent.
Low: Looks poor. Everything is just as obvious as on a computer monitor.

conclusion: if you're doing the 800 by 500 resolution, go with medium quality.
If you're intending the user to zoom in, keep the high quality.

Don't post in a thread asking people to read another thread, send a Personal Message.

I was wondering, has anyone played a game on their wii yet? Tatical assassin, I think would be a good one to test out.

I played some stuff on Wiicade.com and two BCI games.
Haven't tried tactical Assasin though. where would I find that?
