Personally, I like them.

at least, the ones I've heard. Sometimes, songs are 'covered', but turn out...horribly, so to speak.

There's also a small difference, too.

Cover = where you attempt to sound like the original
Tribute = where you use your band's "sound" and do the song, in your style.

Basically, what do you like, and what covers/tributes do you have?

I have...

Both the original and the cover of:

Aces High (Iron Maiden - O; Children of Bodom - T)
Back in Black (AC/DC - O; Steriogram - C)
Black Sabbath (Black Sabbath - O; Iced Earth - T)
Electric Funeral (Black Sabbath - O; Iced Earth - T)
Eye of the Beholder (Metallica - O; In Flames - C)
Hallowed Be Thy Name (Iron Maiden - O; Iced Earth - C/T)
Highway to Hell (AC/DC - O; Iced Earth - T)
Murders in the Rue Morgue (Iron Maiden - O; In Flames - C/T)
The Number of the Beast (Iron Maiden - O; Iced Eart - T)
Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix - O; Tangerine Dream - C, w/o vocals)
The Ripper (Judas Priest - O; Iced Earth - T)

Songs I don't have the originals for, and am looking for:

All tributes done by Iced Earth

Creatures of the Night (KISS)
Burnin' For You (Blue Oyster Cult)
God of Thunder (KISS)
Screaming for Vengeance (Judas Priest )
Dead Babies (Alice Cooper)
Cities On Flame (Blue Oyster Cult)
It's A Long Way To The Top (AC/DC)

I like Muse' cover/tribute/whatever of The Animals - The House of the Rising Sun

In Flames cover of Eye of the Beholder is great, I heard it on a friends iPod, and have yet to get it myself. I think I'll do that right now.

Also Jose Gonzales - Heartbeats (The Knife)

Ah, you're right. I totally forgot about that.

There's 3 covers on the Melancholy EP: The Ripper, Electric Funeral, and Shooting Star (by Bad Company, originally).

I don't have the original of No Quarter, RS would you mind uploading it?

Posh, I've got the song, I'm uploading it as we speak. I'll edit once it finishes.

(actually, when I finish mah game :P)

Sweet.

Oh ####, you know what... I might be wrong... It might be a band called Blue Monday, sorry.

(zaf: why the hell not)

EDIT:: Upon further investigation, I conclude that I have no freaking idea who covered it, as it has been covered more than three trillion times.

EDIT:: Upon further investigation, it appears that I am indeed a ####ing retard. Blue Monday is an Orgy song...

You don't EVAR forget Primus! I like Primus's cover of "Hello Skinny" @ Woodstock '94 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSSu1gYRE-U) and the Original Residents song. That's why I named myself helloskinny12.:D

Oh!
How can anyone forget Apocalyptica's covers of Metallica?

How about Apocalyptica's covers of..anything they did a cover of? Domination by Pantera was pretty epic

Dream Theater has a ####LOAD of covers, including the full album of Master of Puppets, Dark Side of the Moon, and The Number of the Beast (done live!)

And a bunch of random covers found on their A Change of Seasons EP (which, oddly enough, is longer than your average grindcore or deathgrind album. lol.) It's actually a really long EP anyway, being about an hour long.
