I'm glad that there'll be plenty of Wiis
Wow, some bad PR for Sony.
Reporter - "Can you explain how your system invokes inexplicable rage in potential customers?"
Sony - "Uh, did we mention Blue-Ray?"

No, it just shows how gay, impatient sony fanboys are. :)

Somebody actually saw a list on how many consoles will be shipped to each store, and he said that only 150-200k will be shipped.

This is the second time Sony has ####ed up with first-day shipment of the playstation series. The exact same thing happened with PS2's. Do they not understand the idea of having a supply just slightly more than the demand?
Because, honestly, Nintendo has much smarter marketing strategies. People don't need to push and shove. Nobody needs to get injured.

I think it's kind of funny and sad how people go crazy for consoles.
I mean PS3 is gonna be fun and all, but why start all that over it?

Now we all know that Kotaku isn't the best site to get your hard facts for gaming information, but so you all know, this was NOT written by one of their journalists. You can believe it has little bias because the writer is independent, and he documented it well.
Here's my thoughts.
Sony wants to create a high demand. It's very plausible that they have a lot more consoles they aren't talking about, waiting to be released. Even if they don't, a lot of people are trying to get the console immediately. I do believe that they are going for the shock and awe factor with the technology, but I believe they miscalculated their launch line up.
Without enough solid games people would be psyched to get, along with a high price tag, few people are actually buying a lot of games. This means that we won't see a lot of public reaction from the console when it launches until people start getting more games. If Sony can't sell enough games, they wont achieve this shock and awe effect they are looking for.
Nintendo has the upper hand on this launch. I think that launching a few days later is actually smarter because it leaves Sony with enough time to mess up before the Wii launches. This kind of bad PR sways opinions over time (because that's all we've seen from Sony lately), and I think a WHOLE lot of kids, parents, whoever are going to buy the Wii in order to avoid this PS3 debacle. Along with that, the Wii actually DOES come with a game, and unlike the PS3, it wont be sitting there forever. I believe that when people start to get a feel for Wii Sports, they will want to try something new, which will reintroduce interest in the console and it's games. It seems to me that if nothing seriously bad happens at launch, Nintendo will win Q4 2006 unopposed.
What's in store for the future? I honestly think that it's up to the game developers. Both the Wii and the PS3 will sell, no matter the reaction. The Wii and PS3 can both flop if the games aren't good. The heavy console sales early on aren't necessarily enough to keep Sony in profit. Even if the Wii hardware actually does sell for profit, Nintendo has undoubtedly invested heavily in this, and needs good software sales to stay afloat.

Marketing failure? I think not. Selling a few PS3's the first day and making people want more PS3 is pure genius. Then sending more PS3's to the stores and watch them sell out.

Yeah but what if they find out PS3's are sold out and just grab a Wii the next day?
I doubt many people would be that spontaneous, but you never know.

That might make sense, but Sony is getting screwed out of their minds right now.
Because of console scalping, people are buying hard to get PS3's for well over 1800, sometimes 2000 dollars.
Think about that. Selling for over three times the price? That's over 1000 dollars of extra profit killed due to selfish scalpers. Every dollar of that could potentially be a game purchase, more hardware, Sony products, anything. Sony is getting screwed out of their brains because the real hardcore gamers are blowing all of their money just trying to get their hands on it.
Edit:

Actually, that's more likely than you would imagine. There are PLENTY of fence sitters out there just looking for a reason to sway either direction.

They sell out the first day and people find out how hard it is to get a PS3. The next shipment comes with more PS3's and people that weren't planning to get a PS3 gets one. When people see how hard it is to obtain something these people plan to wait for more in stock and buy a PS3.

And the scalpers will be back, again. And although that isn't a huge problem everywhere, it'll be a serious problem in North America because a lot of smaller stores only get 5-6 PS3's. What Sony needs to rely on is that local people wont just pick one up and resell it. Sony needs it's customers to hold on to their PS3's, or else the software situation will only get worse.
Edit: And lets not forget if some people can't get it quickly, they might be discouraged from being disappointed again.

just as a side note, nintendo has been absolutely whoring the Wii advertisements for the last half year. I've been many places, seen many things, and I've heard the word Wii hundreds of times more than Ps3. Everyone most likely knows about the Wii at this point, and I know I'm psyched to get one.

Mike, where in the world are you? Wherever you are, you've seen a lot more ads than most of us. From what I've seen, most of the TV ads for Wii just started popping up in the last week or so.
I've seen some online stuff too, but cool, I like PR.
Sinkman: Good idea.

The funny thing is, I haven't seen a banner ad or anything for the Wii. Nothing on TV. Nothing on the internet. I haven't seen one ad.
Yet they're getting the same, if not more, publicity than PS3. It's interesting, really.

Well hey, I welcome it. Word of mouth has been nothing but good for the Wii, even if the name wasn't immediately accepted.

I'm seeing banners for the Wii around the internet, and let's not forget the Southpark mention, and the massive storefront-consuming Wii ad at the Toys R Us in Times Square. The first TV Wii ads are starting to air now, and they're quite good and can really entice customers - ads for Wii games are automatically ads for the Wii itself, since customers will ask "What's that?" Nintendo is really harnessing the power of word-of-mouth.
I like how Sony fans sometimes brag about the fact that the PS3 will sell out. That's no surprise - there's a huge demand and a tiny supply. The Wii will sell out too, and the numbers are far more impressive.

Actually, I kind of doubt Nintendo selling out quickly. I think they will try to keep a marginally large storage stock so the PS3 problems don't happen with the Wii.
I do see a lot more Wii's being sold in the near future though.

The people fighting aren't trying to buy one for themselves.. They're just trying to sell it for thousands on eBay.
You mean, it shows how stupid Sony Fanboys are for buying PS3's for thousands of dollars, causing the people that sell them on eBay to break laws to get hold of them?

Impatience for the PS3, fueled by Sony's marketting strategy. I expect the Wii to win this generation, with PS3 2nd, and the 360 right behind the PS3

People are killing each other over here for the thing.
On the local news, they had a clip of some mexican guy bragging that he was the first one to get it at his local store.(Where the violent rush to the store took place.)
Silly mexicans.
