an airplane leaves los angeles for denver at a speed of 440 mph. thirty min later, a plane going from denver to los angeles leaves denver, which is 850 miles from los angeles, at a speed of 480 mph. when they meet, how far are they from denver?

anyone know how to do this?

Plane 1: The plane from L.A. to Denver.
Plane 2: The plane from Denver to L.A.

As Distance = Time * Speed, the equation for Plane 1's distance is 440*x and the equation for Plane 2 is 480*x, where x is the time in hours.

However, Plane 1 has a head start of 30 minutes, meaning that you always have to add the distance it went in half an hour, which is 440*2 = 220. So now your equation for Plane 1 is

Distance = 440 * x + 220

When do they meet? Well, they meet when their distances add up to 850 miles. When that happens, they'll both have covered a certain distance which add up to the distance from L.A. to Denver, meaning they meet.

So, Distance of Plane 1 + Distance of Plane 2 = 850. Now use our equations from above:

(440*x +220) + (480*x) = 850

You can now solve the equation for x, which looks as follows:

440x + 480x + 220 = 850

920x = 630

x = 0.68478 hours, or approximately 41 minutes and 5 seconds.

So how do we get the distance to Denver? Since Plane 2 started in Denver, the distance it covered up to the point at which they meet is the distance to Denver. So we use our value for x in plane 2's equation:

D = 480*0.68478

The distance to Denver is approximately 328.7 miles.

And those are incredibly ugly numbers. What grade are you in? I don't recall ever using odd numbers like that when doing these equations for the first time.

I take Spanish. I just took my midterm today. It didn't turn out as bad as I though it would...

*sigh* 3 more days of exams. On a lighter note, 3 more school days until X-Mas break!

No problem.

well reality...do you take spanish?

Used to. Then I moved back to germany and no longer had the option to (as the school didn't offer it). So I continued Latin, which I now no longer take anymore either. I've forgotten both languages nearly completely :-D

Ouch, good luck.
As for exams, I find the best thing to have is good test taking skills. With this, you do not have to have to know every answer.
For example, take my final Latin exam. I think I was able to answer some 65% of the questions correctly with full confidence. The rest of the questions I just guessed with my test taking skills. Yet, when I got my exam grade, I made 88% correct! This proves to me that the best thing to have for exams is good test taking skills.
However, as a final note. In order to have good test taking skills, you need at least a decent amount of knowledge on what you’re being tested on. Also, this doesn’t work so well if what your exam isn’t multiple choice.

Thanks.

I love multiple choice tests.... I just get rid of the answers that are blatantly wrong, and take an educated guess at the leftover ones...

Well, long story made short: Bandit was once Bandit de la Rouche. Or something along those lines. And I used to be DarkReality. So someone suggested I change my name to Reality de la Dark, which sounded far too feminine for my taste, so it turned into Reality del Dark.

Ok, so it wasn't make short. Shoot me. On second thought, please don't.
