View Full Version : Stupid windows. *Turns on Darc signal*

Weeeeel, I accidently powered off my laptop (battery was out, and power cord unplugged) while logging out. It was saving my profile changes. Then I go to log on, and I get an error (with a 30 sec timer)

Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator.

DETAIL - An I/O operation initiated by the registry failed unrecoverably. The registry could not read in, or write out, or flush, one of the files that contain the system's image of the registry.

Then it goes on to log me in a temp profile. All my information is there for my profile, it just doesn't log me on.

I'm guessing it's the corrupt'd profile, and I've searched around, but no one has had the exact problem I got.

Any helpxorz?

Unfortunately, I think you might have to delete your profile. Ever tried downloading a file on IE (which doesn't resume downloads...), and closing the window? You'll end up with a partially downloaded file which doesn't work and just wastes disc space... This is the same thing with your profile.

I think you should try to find the parts that are corrupt and delete them.

The message about the registry is disturbing. There should be no reason for the registry to exist in Windows, but for the sake of cross-platform (windows within windows) compatibility....

Uh. Disturbing is not something I want to hear associated with my registry =P

Delete my profile? That suxorz. Since the files I really need are still intact, I can salvage that, but all meh settings... =(

Salvage as much as you can... just deleted the corrupt.

Easy solution: save your files to cd/usb storage devices and reinstall windows. Or you can try windows recovery. I know ME and up have so-called save-points (at least ME and XP do) which restore your computer to an earlier date. If you're lucky, it's made some automatic save points. Pick one from before the accident and your registry should be fine again. Dunno about your profile, though. You'll just have to reinstall programs you installed after the date of the save point.

At the risk of once again getting flamed: Get Linux and Firefox.

If you are using 95, you can click cancel. Otherwise, you will need a different profile to logon. From there you must delete the corrupted profile and remake it.

Good luck if this is NT, because I don't know what to do.

Joey, if you do this again, I'm really going to explode. When laying in bits all around the place, I am NOT responsible for my actions. They want an answer to their windows problem. Not some idiot coming to tell them that they have to switch. It's not an answer.

Anyway, I can only agree with Dark and Helios, although I would go about it a different way. I'd back up my profile, make a new one, and slowly add in the parts of the old one, hoping it will work, until it fails. I'd then reinstate everything except the part that failed.

Or you can just back up your data, get that rescue disk you've been meaning to pick up, and start over.

Sure, linux is cool...

Shut the hell up about it already.

Just do what noclue2 said.. All you need are your bookmarks, chances are.

What is with Joey and promoting Linux and Firefox?

Well:

Dark: I'm pretty sure that my registry's fine, but my profile isn't. I may try a sysrestore to see if it will save my profile (backing up my salvaged profile beforehand, of course), but I'm going to try noclue's method first.

Joey: I use firefox (duh). But incase you didn't know, windows profiles have absolutely nothing to do with your browser. And I was going to switch to yoper but {see the noclue heading}

And, I can choose to log onto any profile I want. It's not forcing me to log onto the corrupted one.

Noclue: I was thinking about doing that (what you and helios said), just add parts in untill it exploded.

I can't get the rescue DVD; the company that they go through wouldn't let me have one because I'm not a student of (or affiliated) with NMU anymore.

Well, not to double post or anything, but I copied profile A (corrupt'd) to profile B while on profile C so nothing from A or B was running so it would copy fine. It did, but something is still corrupted, and it corrupted B too. I guess I can just take the vitals (My desktop stuff, favs, etc) and then start over.

*sigh*

Okay, from now on I will not go on about FireFox and Linux except in threads specifically for comparing these to Windows. Simply quote this post should I do it again.

Log onto the temp profile and delete the original if you search the registry for stuff like 'home page' you may be able to salvage some items, maybe.

This does not appear to be a fixable problem, but please post what version of Windows you are using as well as any permissions (admin, limited, standard) the original user had.

I have a course of action in mind, but I want darc's opinion.

My suggestion:

Go out into your back yard with a bottle of hot sauce and a cat. Put a lot of hot sauce on the cat's back, and then get a hose. Water the cat down, and then take a picture. Finally, convert this post from spam.

I feel bad for you.

I keep telling you, invite me over and I'll help you with that.

I'll even bring my mp3 player so you can back up your data onto it.
