Gmail has recently enabled POP and SMTP servers. Basically, you can access your Gmail account from Outlook, Thunderbird, or whatever.
Click here (http://gmail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12103) for more information on how to do this.

Oh, and I have 5 invites if anyone wants them. Just tell me your email adress and I'll send it away.

I tried that with Outlook *shudder*
All of my Google Alerts were separated, giving me about 50 new messages a day, compared with the 5 I receive with GMail. I should try Thunderbird.
