View Full Version : The Mafia Game
Sperry

Would any of you lovely RP-ers have interest in such a game? For those of you who do not know, the mafia game is extremely similar to the recently played TWG, save for the fact that it is much simpler (and controlled by a much more reliable GM :P) and has some simple variations. This game can either be extremely mysterious and filled with awesomeness (there's my vocabulary again); or it can be dull and drag along the floor, depending entirely on the activity of the participants. It doesn't take much effort, just a bit of back-stabbing, lieing and sometimes trying to bribe torrent, but other than that simply showing up will do you good. For those of you who do not remember, below is a quote of torrent's original description of this game, for simplicity's sake I will steal and alter as necessary:You may know this game, its something i learned in summer camp, and i thought i would try it on the forums. So, basically, i am the moderator, and it is a mystery game. One person is the mafia, one person is the doctor, and one person is the detective. The rest of the people are townspeople. At the begining of the game, the mafia tells me (in private) who they wan't to kill. then, the doctor (again in private) tells me who they want to save. Then, if the doctor chose the same person as the mafia, then the person doesn't die, but if they don't, then the person dies. Now, everyone tries to figure out who the mafia is, and the mafia tries not to be discovered. Next people "accuse" who they think is the mafia, and yes, the mafia can fake it and accuse someone else.(the doctor and detective are also considered "townspeople" Then, everyone votes for the people who were accused, and whoever has the most votes, dies. If the mafia gets chosen and killed, the townspeople win, but if not, they keep on going. Next, the detective (onece more in private) tells me who they think the mafia is, and we start the cycle all over again, but this time, if the detective guesses right, the mafia dies. If the detective guesses wrong, nothing happens. If during voting, there is a tie, no one dies.
so, down to the money part...
If you are the mafia, and you kill everyone, you win 100 xcash
if you are the detective, and you guess who the mafia is, you win 100 xcash
If you are the doctor, you win 20 xcash for each person you save
if you are a townsperson and you acuse the mafia and the mafia dies, you win 50 xcash
if you are a townsperson and you vote for the mafia and the mafia dies, you get 10 xcash
if you survive to the end of the game, you get 1 xcash for playing
if you don't apply to any of these, you get nothing
we need at least 8 - 10 people minimum, with no maximum number of people. If you want to play, post here, and we'll start when we have a good number of people who want to play. The first 5 people to join get a 10 xcash bonus if they stay till the end of the game.1) Gameplay will go unaltered - PMs sent to me at the beginning of the game; from each respective group. Size of each 'specialty group' will vary based on number of players.
2) Inactivity constitutes death; at the GM's discretion.
3) The prize values, listed above, shall be altered to the following (in order) amounts:
300
250
50
75
25
15
Simply for the fact that I can afford it (not from the admin donate bin) and so can everyone else. Not that xcash is a very valuable prize to most, but it is an incentive to play. Sort-of.
4) Gameplay will depend on interest. If no one wishes to play this game right now, we won't; because a dragging game sucks. If otherwise, I won't wait a month for some fixed boob-hat amount - we'll start when we start; all based on interest.
Up for it? Sperry should wait? Rant? Eat pie? Do do something, ladies and gents.

Well, a nice zooming start with lower numbers is better than a slugging en masse. Or so I say. For those who do not know (I.E, citizens):
You and your fellows are the local inhabitants of the moderately small village of Williamshire, located in central-eastern England, roughly 100 miles north of London. By local whisperings, it has become quite apparant to the entire town that three mysterious figures are among them - each of them of high renound in their fields, though none seem to know which of these simple townfolk is guised; and quite actually leading an entirely different life. The first, and perhaps most secretive, is the detective sent to your small lifestyle from the illustrious Scotland Yard - though, for fear of not succeeding in their investigation, they have neglected to announce their identity to the town. Another, possibly more relieving person present is a physician of the Physicians of East England Society (PEES for short); who has come under the desire to preserve the lives of these good townsfolk. By far the most dangerous stranger is a member of the International Mafia Organization - a ringleader of a nearby mafia circle. Since this man is not identified, he serves as a serious threat to your very lives - something that raises paranoia and mutual accusation throughout the town.

I'm double posting. I'm such a rebel. I'm doing it for the xcash, leave me alone! >_>
An eerie calm settles over Williamshire, trace snowflakes fluttering down serving as the only movement in the silent of the night. As the town rests its weary eyes from the troubles of late, not all is as quiet as it seems. To the crow sitting in the large oak tree, the entire ordeal appeared overly amusing; not that it had any understanding of what it was seeing. A man, skulking in the shadows, waits for the opportune moment. A window, some way down the main road, alit by candlelight, noises of rummaging quite blatant to the empty night. And a third, quite distant from the others, sitting, nervously, on the steps of a small red brick house; his little black baggie in hand. The window dims and grows silent, and a man leaves some minutes later - entering another building even further uproad, falling out of sight of our crowly observer. The unsettled man grows weary, his head coming to rest on the railing beside him. For some time, silence returns to the night. And then, off in the distance, the crow notes a fourth. A man, trotting about in the night, makes terribly loud claps with his shoes on the cobblestone road. Dreadfully noisy, even for a human, the crow ponders. Minutes later, the remaining lurker finally notices the disturbance - and turns in an effort to follow. As if in a chuckle, the crow pushes off from his branch and turns toward the hillside for some rest - the piercing scream of a noisy human causing a gleam in its yellow eye, flying in the night.
Morning and the scream and faint of a witless woman reveals the cause of last night's racket to Williamshire. The town, now awake and out of their slumber, easily comprehends the noise - several men rushing to the location to assure the woman's wellbeing. Only, of course, to discover the body of another. The street, ridden with the blood of the man, had lain clear until Miss Arthenstile's morning walk. Luckily for Miss Arthenstile, her lovely Tuesday dress find itself in the pool of zecantu's blood. The men, enraged that such a thing has occured, erupt into shouts such as the likes of "Unbelievable! Who dares kill in Williamshire" and "What of Scotland Yard now!" - clearly disturbed that such renound physicians and detective minds could let this happen. The group sets in their mind the desire for the town people themselves to seek out the killer - all are suspects, and someone must die to prevent more losses of innocents. How shall you act?

No this's what I think. We need to look at the killings, and figure out a pattern. Randomly accusing makes the mafia's job easier.

There's only been one killing, so no pattern either.
I guess all we can do right now is vote randomly and wait for someone who voted for someone in specific to die, then accuse the person he voted for.
I mean, in that situation, you risk being killed by him later, so the logical thing to do would be to kill him and hope no one notices.

Tiiime's up! Dun Dun Dun.
The now large group of men who had gathered near the body and the still-petrified (and as of yet unattended to) Miss Arthenstile entered into further uproar and miscontent; men accusing fellow neighbours, townsfolk and even strangers they knew nothing of and had never seen before of doing this foul deed. After much needless shouting and accusation, a single voice rose over the crowd, hollering "Enough of this foolishness! Let us kill the devil who has done this and be back to our business! I will not be so unsettled every morning from constant idiocy and death!" And, with that, the mob-like gathering seemed intent on a nostalgically witch-style burning of their favourite foe (thus serving to be the most likely to die). One thing turned to another, and within an hour the burned body of doug05257 was splashed with water and, when cooled, pulled from the pile of wood in the center of the street. The crowd, enthused with their success, collectively opted to storm the man's former dwelling; where they perhaps could find some hinting as to if this was the man they sought. And in this home, some two miles away from the place of Arthenstile's fainting (who had now spent the better part of her day, including tea-time, in such a state), was found several articles which the townsfolk decided were of 'due importance' to their 'case'.
First of which, a pistol, armarments inclusive, had sat quietly inside the upper right drawer of what seemed to be some sort of office desk in the man's study. Then, of course, were the papers of strange jargon and code; clearly containing some form of message, tossed about the master bedroom. Finally and most unfortunate to the raid was the single paper, nailed to the wall some distance from the guest rooms, clearly marked with the insignia of Scotland Yard. Futile and foolish, this particular Williamshire execution.

Miss Arthenstile awoke to the bothersome pecking of the previous night's crow, the creature clearly thinking the woman to be dead (the blood-stained stones nearby being of no avail to such a situation). Startled and unsure of where she was and why, Miss Arthenstile shooed off her assailant and attempted to gather her location. Ah, yes, that's right. She was on her morning walk, just here on Pertybott Road; and ... Oh my, it is quite cloudly for this time of the day, isn't it? Miss Arthenstile was never known to be a woman of keen thinking or of any reliable logic, so it is no wonder that she could see no difference between a cloudly day and night time (having never been awake to experience the latter). In an effort to return home to tend to the children of Mr. Andrews (being a widower), who would undoubtedly be awake by now (they had, in fact, been put to bed by their father some hours ago), Miss Arthenstile decided to cut short her no-longer morning stroll and turn about in her former path. It is fortunate that silly Arthenstile did such a thing, as without her unexpected presence the following events would never have been made apparant.
In her rush to return to tend to the Andrews, Miss Arthenstile paid no attention to the weary man she passed some way up the road; who as the avian observor (who had since returned to his perch) was aware had done so for at least two nights now. The man, too, ignored his passing company; as she was rash and quickly dashing about the town (hardly uncharacteristic for eccentric women of Williamshire), and he was exhausted and without any real sense of what was going on about him. Turning the final corner and approaching the Andrews home, Miss Arthenstile happened to hear very loud footfalls behind her. Turning in a terrified state (even she knew the dangers of ominous footfalls when murders are afoot), Miss Arthenstile was able only to catch a brief glimpse of a quick, dark shadow crossing the road some twenty houses distant. Pausing in such a position for only a moment, Miss Arthenstile elected to continue in order to avoid such strange folk scurrying about on their own as that mysterious figure was (a rather ironic deduction, one might think). The typical noise of the second step to the Andrews home was drowned out by an agonizing scream of terror mixed with pain; no doubt to the death of yet another unfortunate Williamshire innocent.
By morning, another crowd, like to the previous day's, had gathered this time in the midst of the town square; roughly three blocks from the home of the Andrews. As with the stones of Pertybott, the square was befouled with the blood of a helpless night time victim - this time, that of The Prodigal.

A second death in Williamshire certainly served to bring far more rage to the village than the first. The only intent of the amassed crowd was to find someone - anyone - to rid themselves of. A perfect opportunity to eliminate one's social and political enemies, no doubt. As the day advanced, the crowd seemed to be divided into two groups - much to the distress of the pair which they desired to slay. "Oh, why don't we just kill 'em both now?" called a voice from the throng. And so they worked to. Duke II and LightZoma were grabbed each by several men, held in place and brought toward the front of the gathered crowd - just below the statue of William Arbers; from which Williamshire was named. Ropes were brought, seemingly from nowhere (this being a very resourceful gang of brigands), and first lifted up to the statue's arms was LightZoma (the Arbers statue stood with its arms outstretched to the main road, welcoming all visitors to the town square; leaving ample room on each arm for a noose). It was during this time, when the crowd was so excited with the near killing of this man, that Duke II managed to wiggle free of his distracted holders, rushing off down the road and turning a bend in fright. "Agh, well, at least we get to take care of this one!" Not much longer did the breath remain in LightZoma, whose body now dangled from the limb of their fine founder. A slice and a thud resulted from the cutting of the rope as the man's body fell to the small flower garden below. The light of the sun rained down upon the body in the town square; illuminating the steel of what was soon revealed to be a PEES stethoscope.

The various pools of dried blood that littered Williamshire turned the town into a deserted waste during the night. There was no man shuffling house to house, tossing up drawers and seeking out papers. Nor was there the sleeping watchdog outside token houses; and of course even Miss Arthenstile was now well within doors. The crow, in his watchful state, quickly became terribly bored - it was so intent on seeing how far these big folks would take this game. Yet, much to its disappointment, no lurker could be found wandering the streets following foolish trodders in the night. Just upon the decision to return to its young, the crow was most excited to hear the now-familiar sound of footfalls down below. This time, however, those footfalls were much closer to its perch. Looking frantically for their source (the crow had due reason to mistrust the big folk; and recent events had done nothing to aid that bias), our observor came to rest upon the man he had seen so many times before - even amongst the crowds during the day - the killer of so many persons. Patiently anticipating the death of another, the crow was greatly unsettled by the sudden movement of the man and a great shaking of the tree. Looking downward for th source, the crow noted a man standing at the base of the tree, a chopping axe portruding from his chest. Curious that the crow had not noticed the man approach earlier - it must have been in the forest, seemingly seeking out the killer, all day (particularly because the man seemed asleep, as no chilling scream was uttered - something that depressed our friend). By morning, when the woodsmen went to their chopping duties (firewood is key to Williamshire's warmth), the stiff corpse of noobpwner1 was found at the base of the now abandonned tree.

Just so everyone remembers, the following are still alive (and thus one of you is the mafia):
GenericNamesake
tanktunker
Duke II
Also, please note that if the civilians cannot determine who the mafia is this round, then the mafia will reveal themselves and continue to execute the rest of the townsfolk without fear of reprisal - making Williamshire an example to the region the power of the IMO. Just as a note. So; pick wisely.

Damnit.
I'm absolutely positive I know who it is.
Ahem. I'll be back in the afterlife now, boxing with noobpwner1.

You do not tell them when you have an idea. The mafia killed you and NP1 cause of that. Too bad there is no pattern...
Ah. So nice. We had a few really good games, and a few really crappy ones.
Like mine? One shot one kill...
Anyways, I am pissed that I did not get in this. I have PM'd Tor multiple times begging him to start it back up...

Tanktunker - 1
I guess as a casual observor, me and the crow get to notice the lovely details in all of this. Tank, Duke, I await your votes.

I vote Tank.
Blol, everybody but the mafia is going to kill each other.
Besides, I have a rather excellant guess on who mafia is. ^^(It's Sperreh! I know it, 'cause nobody actually PMs him to say who they want to kill! I know this because the killings happen too fast!! Kill! Kill! Kill Sperreh!)
Telling people to kill Sperry won't work, he's too :P
Tanktunker

What?!
Personally, I think it's GenericNamesake, he's been silent for most of the game, except for 2 votes, so, even though it doesn't matter, I vote GenericNamesake.

As everyone has voted...
Turned on by the remaining populous, the man made poor, hopeless efforts to escape the vicious crowd. In a final attempt (the previous four having failed), the man did succeed in escaping his would-be slayers; looking back to not see them following right behind. Unfortunate for the man, he turned around but a second before the oak greeted him. It would not be long before the mob found their next victim, crumbled beneath the tree. Though out cold, the townsfolk knew he was still alive - and they took that opportunity to grab several particularly large, uncomforting branches which had fallen during the storm of three weeks past. Beaten to a bloody pulp, tanktunker soon made an easy feat for our observor and his fellow avians; who bided their time for such a treat until after the humans had returned to the town. The envelope and its contents made it quite clear - the man from IMO, after all this tragedy, had finally been caught. So much for their 'glorious exampling' of Williamshire.

It gets tough at the final three. Probably the toughest part in the game IMO.
Y'played well though.
Made great choices on who to kill.

Mafia 2 thread ASAP!
Forget torrent. Lets play.
If we're going to make a new thread for each game, might I point out that we may soon need an 'Archived RPs' Sub-Forum?
Or either way, it might be useful . . .
Mafia RP subforum?

I'll shut up now.

Given how they (subforums) were recently deleted, why would Vag want to add more?
Mafia doesn't need a forum.

Mafia doesn't need a forum.
But . . . we need to clutter up the opening screen again! We can't live without that, right?
-_-
The idea was to keep 'Mafia #3', 'Mafia #4', 'Mafia #5', and 'Mafia #42' from keeping us from seeing our other RPs that, though reasonably active, keep getting knocked down by someone that bumps the old Mafia threads.

Alas, no, I did not. But let's get a lock on this thread, so no one will bump it, like Aedien said.
