Perhaps T might have still missed, but you can't just consider Zidane as another kicker. He was their captain, their rallying point, and the only reason why the team was enthused enough to pick up from their poor start. To have him red-carded for such a stupid and highly unprofessional act in the final game was almost certainly crushing for their morale.

Despite the fact he is easily one of the best players in the world, most Americans just know him as "that crazy headbutt guy", which is a bit of a shame because he is so much more than that.

He is easily one of the greatest players of all time, even at his age he still was outskilling the Brazilians and was easily the reason that France got so far in the tournament, not to mention in 98 when he scored twice in the final.

It was a bit of an odd punishment for him to get fined and get a three-match ban considering he's retired

I don't think most Americans understand the seriousness of this.
Imagine David Ortiz hitting a walkoff homer in game 7 of the American league championship series versus the Yankees. A-Rod shouts 'your mama is so fat' and Ortiz runs off the basepath and rams his head into A-rod's stomach. The red sox loose.
Imagine Peyton Manning in a position to throw the winnning touchdown pass with time expiring in the super bowl, an oppenent says 'your mama is so stupid' and Manning drops the ball and headbutts him right in the chest. The Colts would loose.
Yeah, that guy completely lost it over one measly insult, and that's why his country lost.

I've seen NHL games in which worse things have been said and have seen players keep it together. I can understand this, but not in the world cup final, he put himself before his own team.
