I think this will be weird ####.
I'm not really sure if I'll like it, it'll probably just be like the video game, but with more dialogue and less player interaction.

It has to be good man. It just has to. You've got Halo's story and action, Peter Jackson directing, and the fact that most movies based off video games were pretty good.

I actually think Halo is going to be a good movie.
First of all, it has Peter Jackson producing, and I think his movies are totally awesome.
Secondly, unlike Doom and House of the Dead, Halo actually had a story in the game, so there is more to work with.
Lastly...well, I like Halo, so there.

The Flood is a major part of the Halo story.

They are making a Metal Gear Solid movie - Hideo Kojima has confirmed it. I'll see, but I know it will be bad.

Let me make one thing clear: Peter Jackson is NOT directing the Halo movie. He is producing, which mainly means that he is giving them money.

I'm sure it'll be bad. Movies based on videogames always are.

He is producing, which mainly means that he is giving them money.Actually, a film producer creates the conditions for making movies. The producer initiates, coordinates, supervises and controls matters such as raising funding, hiring key personnel, and arranging for distributors. The producer is involved throughout all phases of the filmmaking process from development to completion of a project.
And that was definitely not copied and pasted from Wikipedia.

I'm sure it'll be bad. Movies based on videogames always are.Just because most of those video games either have no story behind them or a very bad one.
Take Doom for example.
Doom is a game where you go around shooting things.
Do you know why you go around shooting things?
Because creatures from hell are coming through a teleporter? Yeah, that's a good story.
Same thing with Mortal Kombat. You choose a character and fight.
No explanation given.
Halo is a game where you shoot a bunch of aliens, but that's not all.
It also has a good plot and characters.

Don't bring in misinformation, Peter JAckson is an executive producer, which means that he initiated it, invested in it and/or has some smidget of creative control.

Actually, a film producer creates the conditions for making movies. The producer initiates, coordinates, supervises and controls matters such as raising funding, hiring key personnel, and arranging for distributors. Good for wikipedia nad all, but a producer is first and foremost an investor, and only after that does he have some sort of creative control.
I mean, except for budget related things (Once again, investor), a producer has little creative control over the production itself.
The fact that Peter Jackson liked it doesn't mean it's going to be good, and in my opinion, Peter Jackson's last 2 or 3 movies were so good because he got so much money to make them and good script...ish material.
I mean, seriously, if you have a good story and assloads of money, you have to be a pretty crappy director to screw it up.

It's probably gonna suck. What's the point of making a movie based on a video game?

There's a certain difficulty with turning Halo into a screenplay. You have a multitude of difficult choices.

How do you balance having a backstory for the spartans, describing the war and how it works, and still progressing the story?

You can follow MC for the whole movie, only describing what he sees. You can follow ALL of the spartans, but with emphasis on John. You can also film from both sides of the war perspective. Replicating future war with Halo-like vehicles can't be impossible, but a lot of CGI will be necessary.

You also face dividing the story. Do you start with The Fall Of Reach? Or do you go before that? Maybe you start at Halo, with backstory flashbacks... or you could even start at Earth, giving a brief "future" version of the history of space travel leading to expansion, near collapse, and war.

There's yet another challenge here. With a literal translation of the story into acting, how do you fill the plot gaps left behind sacrificed for gameplay and book storytelling? We never learned how MC and the rest of the crew got all the way back to Earth and what happened (it's understood they used the Gettysburgh, but what happened on the voyage?)? What about Dr. Halsey and Kelly? Let's not forget Col. Ackerson's weapons plans, and most importantly the introduction of the nova "planet killer" bomb.

I only see two reasonable solutions. Either divide the story, or make massive cuts to the storyline.

Edit: I hope to god that the book writers are behind the scripts too, if not, we're in serious trouble.

I thought they were going to concentrate on the induction of the SPARTAN-II's and the fall of Reach. Which is good as that was the best part of the book series.

ow would you capture that on film though? It could be hard to keep it from looking to unrealistic... After all, movies are only good if they are what they are meant to be... Not one where you laugh at all the wrong parts... It'll be a toughy.

Metal Gear Solid has a better storyline than Halo does...

Evil_Penguin, some games have really good storylines. That's why they are made into movies. And the people who liked the games are probably gonna going to go to the movie.

Prodigal is definately right. I want a Metal Gear Solid movie more than a Halo one. I've played both of the games and I think the Halo storyline is pretty bad. Imagine Metal Gear Solid though... Metal Gear Solid one though. The Halo movie is going to be practically all shooting. :/

Hm, maybe I should get and play through Halo. I wasn't aware that it actually had a storyline of much interest.

Metal Gear does show some promise, since the stories of the games are (generally) excellent. Metal Gear Solid has taken over first place on my "best games ever" list largely due to the story. The first time I finished the game, I immediately started over playing through it again to better understand the twists. I've never done that with another game. Great stuff.

Both movies will most likely still be terrible. Movies about videogames just work out that way. If you were lucky enough to get the Limited Edition version of MGS3: Subsistence (I was, with a lot of effort), there's a 4-hour movie made from editing the game's cutscenes and some gameplay footage. It's entertaining, but it's not very good.

I'll still go see the Metal Gear movie, and I'm sure I'll buy it on DVD. But it'll probably be bad.

Halo story line in a nutshell:

Mankind has expanded and is populating the galaxy. As such it's control over worlds starts becoming tenuous. To combat this a group of super soldiers is created to maintain peace and influence. By sheer coincedence an alien race known as the Covenant appears broadcasting that humanity's destructino is the will of the gods and they are the arm, just as the SPARTAN-II unit becomes operational. Outfitted with state of the art MJOLNIR battle armor they fight this new menace and kick butt at i. but as there are only 75 (or somewhere around there) of them, humanity continues to lose. In a last ditch effort an uber cruiser is stocked with uber weapons, engines, as well as the uber soldiers. the cruiser is to capture an enemy battle ship find the coordinants to the covenant homeworld, capture a covenant prophet and then use him to broker a cease-fire. Unfortunately juist before the mission launched the covenant showed up at the military base planet REACH and proceeded to own as they usually do. a majority of the SPARTANs went planetside to combat the covenant. the others had to leave quick so Cortana picked a "random" coordinant to jump to and did. There was Halo, and the covenant following close behind

QFT. I'm not all that excited about this. Maybe that's because I don't like Halo. Star Wars Battlefront FTW!

I think it's fair to say that there will be more than one movie, if Microsoft are doing the whole bible thing and being very careful about the movie, they're either not wanting it to affect any other Halo games - which it wouldn't anyway, gamers would still buy it - or they want to protect the timelines for a series of movies.
