I've had a problem with Episodes I, II, and III for a while, but I just didn't know where to start. I will know try to explain why the prequels did not live up to the original.
The main reason the prequels fail is because of it's use as a love story as it's crux. When you boil the story down, it is all a tragic love story between two different-class people. The original Star Wars was about redemption after failure, and people can identify with it more then they can a love story.
Comedic relief fails in the prequels, mostly due to the abundance of it in Episode I and II. Jar Jar is the worst SW character ever. In 1 he is shown numerous times, and he gets old fast. D2 and 3P0, on the other hand, are placed in the right times, and are used sparingly.
When you learn more about the Star Wars universe, the less you are interested in it. Part of the reason the OT was so good is because it had an air of mystery surrounding it. You weren't exactly sure about the entire universe, and the unknown intrigued you to (hopefully) learn more. Once the secrets of the force are laid out in the prequels, you find out how crappy it really is.
Another reason the prequels aren't as good is because of the lack of uber-awesome characters. Both Anakin and Luke are wimps, but when you have Yoda say such memorable lines such as "size matters not" or "there is no try." you feel, for the lack of a better term, cool. You feel like you are a part of something truly awesome. There isn't any sage characters in the prequels, and I think this hurts it also.
As usual, back-up or argue my points.
