So, the new Pirates of the Carribbean (sp?) is coming out soon, how do you think it will be? Do you think it will even compare to the first one.
I know that I liked the music in the first one a lot, I'm not sure they can top it.

I prefered the ride in Disney to the movie.
Now, make a historically accurate film about pirates and deatyh and blowing up ships and cutlasses and you'll have me running down to the cinema to watch it.

That's my favorite ride at Disney. I don't know why, it's not even all that great of a ride, I just like it.
I personally think the next one will be crap, but maybe it will be good.

Warning: Spoilers included in this post. Highly recommended that if you have not seen the film, you do not read the following.
On that lovely note...
In my opinion, an amazing sequal that far outstretched most; considering that the average sequal sinks (har har) the first. The plotline and character development are given far more attention; while the sub-importances of romance and special effects are, at first glance, put on the back burner. The creators have managed to use their talents to improve the plot, rather than replace it.
Of everything, my only complaint is that of Norrington. I found his character in the previous film, with his 'good evil' nature to be far more entertaining than the emotional sop he is for half of the film. I was greatly pleased to see him return to his old ways; and that it pays off for him in the next film (At World's End).
I loved that they brought Barbossa back. He was my favourite character in the first, and by far the best actor. His characteristic return instantly lit up the "YES!" factor.
The foreshadowing is superb; and the characters are given amazing substance. One of the strongest films I've seen in quite some time.

Again:Spoiler
So you enjoyed saying "YES!" for about 10 second before the movie ended?
Yeah, this movie was great. I liked the special effects and the plot. Special effects...wow. The whole Flying Dutchman crew was a prime example of good special effects. The fish blended seamlessly with their faces, the people I saw it with thought it was real for half of the movie, until I told them that it wasn't.
I think that Jack Sparrow is the best character, mainly because he is so mysterious. You can't ever tell what he will do next.
I'd really like to go see it again, though, I don't think I quite caught everything.

Another Spoiler.
Jack's unpredictability and lolling manner serves to create a good protagonist, but Barbossa's wit and evil sense of charm are better portrayed because his character has had more work - both have put excellent effort in, but Barbossa seemed to be found first, his essence captured more quickly.

The guy they chose for Mr. Beckett just wasn't a good choice. Of all people they had to pick the one that played an extremely odd pastor(or it's equivalent) in Pride & Predjudice (yes I've seen, many times now, my mother's loves that movie). I couldn't take him seriously.
Other than that my only complaint was that they didn't take my suggestion seriously and turn it into Ninjas of the Carribean.

I never saw all of the first movie, embarassingly enough. I need to.
I saw the new one on friday, and thought it was great. I had actually just been doing a little bit of research into mythological creatures, and I had no idea that one was coming. I was like, "Dude! It's Kraken!" and they did a very good job of making it accurate to the mythology. There have been reports of Kraken up into the 1800's, which is pretty cool. It's probably just giant squid sightings, and they're a lot smaller, but even that is pretty cool.
Real giant squids can be up to 45 feet long, reportedly, and we've only seen them a couple of times. They eat whales! Their eyeball is a foot in diameter! Imagine seeing that while scuba diving! There's only one good preserved giant squid, and it's frozen in a block of ice in Australia. All of the others that we find are dried up on a beach. Hopefully we'll find better examples soon. We've only known about giant squids since the 80's! It's remarkable how little we know about the oceans of our planet. For all we know, an even bigger creature like Kracken could really exist! There are reports of all kinds of strange and amazing stuff out there, and many are consistent over centuries. Creatures like Kraken, Roc, the Leviathan... could they really be out there?

You guys are going to hate me, but I think I liked the first one better. The second was was very good, however.
When I saw the kraken, all I could think was, "Oh snap, Kraken! Wheres my Drakkars/Ramming Ships/Pentekonters? Get those transport ships and Dragon ships outta there! Gah, meteor! We're gunnnna diiiieeeee!"
... I play too much Age of Mythology. I mean, I know all the units strong against aquatic myth units T.T

*Usual Spoiler notes*
if it would have shown the crew and barbossa in a boat drifting in the sea o begin their mission i think would have been a better endingI disagree. The movie was already 2.5 hours long - starting to push the time patience for people in a movie. To give Barbossa any decent non-OMGZ! role in the film, at least another half an hour would be necessary, and then the suspense and 'wow' of the last two minutes would be lost. By stopping it where they did, they made sure that people would come to see the next one; and let them know that there would, undoubtledly, be a next one.
One question - did they ever answer why the monkey was still undead?
The monkey isn't undead as in still a ghost. He means that they haven't killed it yet. (I think)
Sperry
07-13-2006, 10:51 AM
They successfully 'kill' the monkey several times - and it is specifically referred to as undead. It is not mortal.

Iunno, my bladder started fil;ling and no amount of action seemed to make it go faster.
And my guess was the monkey never offered the blood sacrifice so it never was made wholeBut then the curse would still be upon all the pirates and they would live happily (if you can call it happy) ever after.
I thought it sucked... so many plotholes...Like the undead monkey??!?!?! Why is it still dead... and why did it even get undead in the first place??!?!?!?!AND WHY IS BARBOSA BACK....*grumbles*
Sperry
07-13-2006, 10:08 PM
"Undead" implies "still like it was" (Though I would like to know why. I'm googling it now.). The 'plothole' of Barbossa's presence is not explained because he gets there 10 seconds before the movie ends. He has one line in the film. And they wouldn't've made it "I got resurrected somehow".
It's a bloomin' adventure/fantasy - is a kraken "a reliable plot contribution"? Not particularly, but don't get harsh over a movie that uses mythical ideals, or you'll be really up the tree about Tolkien.

The monkey stole one of the coins at the very end of the first Pirates, and therefore remains undead. What dude got the heart? The heart belongs to Davy ...Taken from google. Couldn't find the context, it was a long page. So yeah, thief monkey is now the only subject of the curse.

Or maybe it's just another small detail that requires their audience to pay attention. I'd a rather a movie have lots of stuff going on all the time then dealing with one specific character and one specific issue until it's explicitly clear who what why - the latter would take months (not implying that actions are better than dramas - rather that excess of occurance is better than a lack of same).
And ysmm; please, hush now.

DO NOT SEE IT IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY IN THEATERS.
That movie sucked really bad. It was Pirates meets Wild, Wild West with Jar Jar Binks.
It had the people from Pirates and from Wild, Wild West instead of a giant spider it was a giant octopus, and Davey Jones looked like Jar Jar Binks.
Sperry
07-15-2006, 05:53 PM
Well, that's good justification. -_-
Jar Jar's acting was crap and his character universally annoying - Jones' character was done by an established actor and, apart from being a bit obsessive, was not all that irksome.

Anyway, It was entertaining, but not nearly as good as the first. I think they went a little overboard with the Kraken. The waterwheel part was rediculous, too. (how did whatsherface get to the beach before the wheel?). It set up the third movie far too blatently for my tastes as well.
