I played the game start to finish, and never once had an earthquake occur while I was digging. Do they only occur when you're above ground? They seem to be triggered alot from going to shops.

They dont happen when youre underground. That would sometimes trap you down there so u couldnt get back. I think they used to do but it was fixed.

What do the earthquakes do, besides shaking the screen and making it so you can't move for a few seconds?

It moves some of the ground around so if you have made a long shaft it will probably be gone. I think you need to have been under 1000 feet before they appear.

Yep, only happens above ground. Try not to trade ur minerals too many times to avoid the earthquake. Correct me if i've mistaken.. :)

There is a random chance for an earthquake ANY time you enter a building. I've even had them occur before I start digging for the first time. :p
In Beta they USED to occur when you opened your Inventory screen too. Imagine the heartache that caused.
