Short answer: No.

No, there's no Motherload download. If Skye makes another XGen CD, though, it will be on that to play offline!

Well, there is a way you can download it. But when you open it (from your hard drive)...

Trust me, I wasn't planning to duplicate the file. I'll be deleting the file right now. :P

EDIT: Oh yeah, after that message shows up, it redirects the page to xgenstudios.com.

Ah now, but what happens if you open the swf ON xgen?

And what if you have an swf DEcompiler?

I would never buy an swf compiler; Too much money... But I did get a good look at every single sprite in the game thanks to a demo mode.

are you sure its not ur computer? The server seems fine after that day of lag. So maybe your processor just sux

There is a lag issue for slower systems. They don't even have to be entirely too slow. The game does not run at perfect speed even on systems close to 2 GHz CPU speed.

Not to make any solid statements, but if we do make an offline version of motherload it tends to run substantially faster when it is not done through the web browser.

There is away to save the game for offline use but I am not going to share that with anyone other then those who are on the xgen team.

I have a cable connection, 256 ram, and all-in-all a pretty nice computer, but Motherload tends to lag for me also... This gets really REALLY annoying when I'm at the shop and it takes me a minute to buy 30 nanobots, or basically anything else. Sooo... It would be nice if there's a way that could reduce the lag like downloading the game; however, I think that would make it possible for other people to edit- redering highscores useless.. Since I don't have any ideas to suggest, it's like what they say, don't complain if you can't do better yourself. =)

I believe the main reason that it's not downloadable is so that there's an actual incentive for people to buy the next CD.

I'm trying to download it because my computer sucks and lags alot online. I know that the file is located at http://www.xgenstudios.com/play/motherload/motherload.swf

but I try the link and it says forbidden unfortunately.

And a games tend not to lag as much on newgrounds, probably because they pop up in their own window. So submit it to newgrounds.

Robyn

Ok, a few things to mention. First: Liokae is not the dullest bulb here. 8)

Second, submitting it to newground would do nothing for the lag issue. Once the game loads on your system which server you got it from does not affect anything more. Also, having it pop up in a new window would also not affect anything, since it is still being routed through the web browser.

The reason you say games tend to not lag as much of NG is very likely because Motherload is a great deal more complicated than the vast majority of games and animations on NG.

Downloads would mess with the saving system (which is stored server-side i.e. Online).

An offline version would run faster, because the standalone version of Flash Player is faster.

On a nice computer, Motherload runs fine online.

No, it says you pirate it when you run it on your computer. :?

It would also be nice to be able to play it through a proxy (ie. at my school where anything worth looking at is filtered). Unfortunately, the copy protection blocks this. I do understand why they would want to keep the copy protection there, though.

Iam glad soo many people replied :)
even the vice president :D
well... there should at least be a trail version avalable for
download... offline play

Kadin
10-21-2004, 08:17 PM
Lol he's not really the vice president of the site bro. :p It's a ranking you get based on how many posts you've made.
XGen
Tumbleweed
Hobo
Wanderer
McSticks Employee
Janitor
Mail Room Clerk
Salesman
Executive
Vice President
CEO
Exceptional
Genius
Superfan
etc

It's mostly based on the jobs system for the StickRPG game. I've also probably missed or skipped a few etc but you get the idea.

Alexar
10-21-2004, 09:29 PM
Yeah you are right, but not all of them are from Stick RPG, and besides I like the rankings he put anyways... Ok this is getting off topic, but anyways.......

So ye-ah, xgen didn't make a downloadable version of motherload, because they probably wanted to sell it later in their new xgen CD or somtehing like that.

Kadin
10-21-2004, 09:32 PM
They've already confirmed they're putting an offline version on a CD. I'm lazy, not gonna go looking for the thread.

i was reading this and started thinking "if it does not work offline...but workes online........then there must be something on the site that allows it to play"

So i went and typed in http://www.xgenstudios.com/motherload/motherload.swf in my url address thingy and the game poped up with no adds, no instructions at the bottom, nothing.

sooo......a+b+=answer...there must be something on the site that lets you play it.
If there is a html expert on here join in...cuz my knowledge is good but not good enough. if only there was an easer way to do this

Darkfang
11-03-2004, 05:45 PM
p.s. don't really type http://www.xgenstudios.com/motherload/motherload.swf in the address bar. or it will say "do you want to download the file". right click on the link and open...and it will have only the game on it.

Somehow I doubt it would qualify as relavent educational material.

But anyway, This thread is dead now that goldium is out. Now there is a version that works from your home computer without internet access.

Agreed. It would be something you can play for 2 months, then sell it on Ebay to me!!!! :D

Or just try and try again! Motherload isnt that complicated to download.

Justin

but if you download it, you don't get any of the cool new features that goldium has!

I(t really is piss to take a game off the net and put it on your computer using a web maker programme just know how to find the code and take the bit but that i will not say how becuase i will never encourage pirating as i think it wouldnt be fair on the people who worked hard to make it all work smothly and some funky perosn decided to take the whole game change some graphics and make it there own if you know whqt i mean and yes before anybody asked if i have done it before i have but not with motherloadd dont worry i only did it to expand my knolegde of the computing owuld which will lead the world some day anyway i am jsut begginging to finnish of the tutorial of actionscripting on flash mx and soon i will be making my own game but the problem i face i have nobody with knoledge to help me around me but anyway there you go just find out for yourself and make yourself pride B

BUT DO NOT EVER TAKE A GAME OF AND KEEP IT ON YOUR COMPUTER AND ONCE YOU HAVE FOUND OUT JUST KEEP IT IN YOUR BACK OF YOUR HEAD AND NEVER DO IT. ANd Xgen studios i think that motherload is one amzingly awsome game i hope many more improved versions come out!

Ok, Download the game if you have an eyepatch and say YAAARR as you do it. Otherwise, Buy the beautiful, dare I say magical, Motherload: Goldium Edition.

Yes its called hacking and it illegal dont try it

Justin

I've always wondered how illegally copying software got called "piracy". I mean, it's hardly comparable to taking a ship at sea, looting it's cargo, and killing the crew. Really! It's not even really theft, since the wronged party doesn't have anything less than they started with.

It's more like photocopying a textbook.

cutman342
12-18-2004, 07:04 PM
I guess your pirating the "loot" (software) off the "ship" (CD, web site, etc.) and you might sell it (you should get that one). It makes some sense, but really they should call it "copying".

Justin
12-19-2004, 12:50 PM
Yeah. I'm not defending it, It's definitly wrong, I just think calling it piracy is rediculous.

Billybob19900
12-19-2004, 01:12 PM
Maybe they call it piracy because it is the thing a pirate would do today. The one place where the law is stretched thin and is easily accessible today is the Internet. Because of this, the modern day pirate would come here to do their pirating business. This is just a guess.

Wow. not a single period. That's a pretty damn long sentence. The second paragraph's not much better.

But I think what he's trying to say he downloads Flash stuff to his computer all the time, but not with Motherload. Just in case you're interested in getting an offline version of a Flash game, here's how...

Go into the webpage with the movie in. If it's not already showing the .swf file itself, go into 'View Source' for the webpage, run a search for '.swf' and use the results to figure out the path to the file. Once you've figured out the file path (I think the one for Motherload is: http://www.xgenstudios.com/motherload/motherload.swf), you can go into 'File' in the menu bar, and choose 'Save as...' to put it onto your computer.

Of course, this won't work with most of X-Gen's more recent games, such as the new !Fishy! (and of course, Motherload itself). I reckon Skye added a couple of lines of script that check if it's being played from the X-Gen server, probably by doing something like this:

if (_url != "http://www.xgenstudios.com) {
_root.gotoAndStop("blockPlayer");
}

Of course, I've never tried this before, so I probably haven't got the exact syntax right. I think the game's write-protected anyway, so you wouldn't be able to drag it into Flash to steal a few of the graphics or anything.

Then again, I reckon a decompiler could probably remove the script. The best protection from that is to make sure that all the valuable stuff happens after frame 5 in the movie, seeing as the only working decompiler I've seen lets you see the first 5 frames of any .swf in the demo version: people are usually too cheap to go out and buy the full product, so you can take advantage of that.

And in case you're wondering: I have tried downloading Motherload before. My computer is über slow, and Macromedia can't be bothered to give Mac users the same speed upgrades that PC users got for the Flash Player. This makes ANYTHING go about twenty times slower. Even movies. I have to play stuff in low quality if I want it to run even vaguely quickly. I'm pretty much forced to play everything offline, otherwise it moves at a snail's pace.
