Congress is now pushing a law that would end the free and open Internet as we know it. Internet providers like AT&T and Verizon are lobbying Congress hard to gut Network Neutrality, the Internet's First Amendment. Net Neutrality prevents AT&T from choosing which websites open most easily for you based on which site pays AT&T more. So Amazon doesn't have to outbid Barnes & Noble for the right to work more properly on your computer. Many members of Congress take campaign contributions from these companies, and they don't think the public are paying attention to this issue. Let's show them we care - please sign this petition today.

What a disgusting bill. Show Congress how you feel about it, and help keep the internet free from the control of corporate slime.

I'll have to look at this petition more closely. You can't immediately trust anything that comes out of the mouth of moveon.org. They're lobbyists themselves.

I really don't think that this bill would be passed if the government had any sense of sanity.

All kinds of insane bills go through Congress all the time. Broadcast Flag? What a stupid idea. Still almost passed, though.

Lots of the DMCA as a whole is totally idiotic. It still made it into law, without going through Congress' typical drafting. Bloody UN.

Screwing over analog video signals? http://www.publicknowledge.org/node/19
Oh yeah, man.

I think Congress should avoid governing technology altogether. Will they? Not likely.

It is impossible for this to hapen as the government can't control all of the internet.

Ahhhhh... The delicious scent of a mindless post. Magnificent!

It is impossible for this to hapen as the government can't control all of the internet.

It's not a matter of the government controlling the internet. It's a matter of the government not controlling the people who already control the internet.

I saw this like a year ago on TorrentSpy news (before they went gay).

What an insightful and productive post. It's not at all vain and self-serving. You're clearly a good member of these forums. I certainly hope that you continue posting for a long long time.

I think Congress should avoid governing technology altogether. Will they? Not likely.

Be rather nice, wouldn't it?

Look! I'm bumping with new information!

Well, the house voted in favor of the bill that removes net neutrality. Now it's up to the Senate. If the senate votes in favor of the bill, you can kiss the internet as me know it goodbye.

Yep, you Brits are unaffected by our ISPs and our legislation.

06-13-2006, 12:06 PM
What the hell. You'd think this would be all over the news or something.

Ok well please correct me if I am wrong but it means that if this is passed:
My ISP will be able to control which sites load better/faster because they pay more to the ISP who supports some of the congressmen with campaign donations?

I've read it a few times and that's the understanding I got from it. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

The Brown Cow
06-13-2006, 12:07 PM
That's my understanding. I wonder if that means I'll have to shut down my site, since I can't pay loads of money to Comcast?

You have GOT to be kidding me.

If this law is passed, there will be thousands of people ranting with picket signs outaide the Capital.

Even if it does get passed, it won't last for long, I hope...

Thank the lord I don't live elsewhere.

Anywho, just because an Internet Provider is allowed to boost certain sites, I doubt that all of them will. At least ONE has to remain neutral for the sake of it... right?

Sign'd. What makes the internet the internet is it's nuetrality. From government websites, to Ebay, to porn. It's all the same. For now.

06-13-2006, 01:21 PM
Most of the small websites that people go to will probably have to just be shut down. If they are not, then they will just run very slowly.

If this law is passed, do you think xgen would run slower than it does now?

Woolfenstien
06-13-2006, 01:37 PM
It wouldn't affect them. Canadian servers, yo.

snoman99991
06-13-2006, 01:41 PM
I wouldn't think so because Xgen isn't one of those megasites that millions of people visit every day. Xgen is great and all, but Xgen doesn't deal with trading, or a lot of commercial sales.

Because Flash sites don't seem to deal with money on a large scale, I doubt this would affect those sites a lot. They'd be naturally nuetral because there is no reason to slow connections to these sites. Amazon and Ebay might be targeted because they have a lot of money going through them, and both of those sites have incentives to actually pay for fast traffic. I wouldn't see why ISP's would threaten us when we probably aren't the kind of site they'd be able to squeeze lots of money out of.

It's not as if I don't think Xgen is a big site. It is, and we get a lot of traffic around here, but we don't pose any threat as a community to anyone else.

Edit: Just saw woolfy's post. That's true, but considering Canada is so close and the influence America has on Canada (a crying shame if you ask me, I love Canada), countries like Canada and the UK will probably follow the bill.

Question; Are the ISPs in question going to slow down all the sites that don't pay, or speed up the ones who do, or both?

snoman99991
06-13-2006, 02:00 PM
I think what they're talking about is selective, so they slow down sites that other companies pay them to slow down.

People still don't seem to grasp the gravity of the situation.

...
Wouldn't that only affect yankees?

Erm... No. It would affect anyone who accesses any of our servers. Any Yank server you access would be affected, therefore you would be affected.

It wouldn't affect them. Canadian servers, yo.

In this particular case, it might not affect you, Woolfy, but it would affect Americans because we access the XGen servers through AT&T and other ISPs' servers, and those mofos are the ones pushing for this bill. We'll be helpless... Completely at their mercy.

Greed disgusts me.

They honestly can't pass this. Somebody at Congress has to have some common sence. If they pass this bill, then the economy will go down tons. Non-mainstream games (like the Elder Scroll games) will go bankrupt. For the love of god, let the next President care about the gamers.

If they pass this law, millions of hardcore gamers will flock towards the streets and start rioting, which will eventually cause massive economic damage to the United States and the Gaming Industry.
