That's what I would suggest too. It would often be off-topic. You could always ask for them to PM it to you in a post, but make sure that you also have contributed to the thread in that same post, otherwise you could get warn'd up for spamming.

I was just gonna ask the general region of where people live so that i can see if i know any of these people in real life.

Oh most people won't care. Just ask for state if it is in the US, and country for everyone else.

You can usually tell whether or not you know people in real life; there are enough anecdotes and true short stories told here that anyone can be traced easily through a social network.
