well, I got this job at a funeral home to create a database for them using microsoft access and teaching them how to use the forms and add thier information and everything, which is cool. it's a one time thing so i'm only getting a base price, this is where the problem occurs. I've never done this for money. i know how to do everything and i know i'm good for the job, but i don't know how much to charge, and they don't know how much to pay. my mother used to maintain the databases for the dock holders and she said to charge $150, right of the bat. I'm afraid of asking for that much and looking like a cheapskape, the job isn't that hard (well, the guys there are computer illiterate), but you see where i'm comming from. if any of you have some helpful advice or even knowledge of this it would help me greatly.
thanks.

For some reason, when I first read this, I read the topic as "molarity issues" and I thought you were referring to chemical percentages. Chemistry is getting to me.
Ask them what they're willing to pay, and go from there.

yes, because i do believe we have a homework help topic for stuff like that.
anyways, that's what i thought of doing firstit's like a game of beat the bank where I just keep pushing and pushing in my mind of what the price should be.
my mom also said at least 100, because she has people come in a do simple things that take 4 hours and charge her around $2100 for it. but they're professionals.
Ask them for the hot chick in the corner....
>_>
<_<
God, even I find that just totally wrong...

IP, he wasn't referring to your live friend. XD
:P
Er...
Ask them what they think they should pay you, and base any later clients off of that, but make your prices go slightly up for everybody else.

I'm in the same situation with the money-type thing. Just remember this: if you can do the job right, and make a pretty invoice, you are a professional and therefore can charge what you want. $150 is fine; the job you are doing could potentially cost $2500, depending on the type of database implemented.
I am a web designer/implementer who charges $25/hr, and I've been informed that I could easily charge $500/hr for my services.

See? Look at the type of help Xgen provides. This guy could be spending his time making insane amounts of money, and here you go getting free advice and such. I hope you're donating to him, after all, that's expert advice right there.

It depends on how tough the job will be. If it's just a simple database, and you can create it by typing a tiny bit of info and exporting, you probably shouldn't charge very much. But if they want you to write scripts, and help with upkeep of the database, you should definitely be charging extra.
The last job I had which was similar to this consisted of creating a site, a CSS layout, a few PHP scripts and a rather simple database. That scored me about 400 dollars worth of software. Of course, they still expect me to help with upkeep of the site and to help fix things that need to be fixed, but all in all I'd say I'm getting a great deal for my work.

all it is is making a database with two tables, one for keeping donator info and the other for pulling up that information later when they come in to make other donations. just a slight bit of extra stuff so i can make it more simple for them to save and print out and bring up the addresses. but either then that, anyone who has worked with microsoft access could most likely do it. It's just that they specialize in the dead and the dying, not technology.
