4556. Why not just use a calculator? Since you're online, ya know google has a built in calculator.
And how'd you get that answer crusty?
2+2 = 4
3*7 = 21
4 - 21 = -17.
-17 + 85 = 68.
68*67 = 4556.

Order of operations Psydd
PEMDAS
Parenthesis
Expontents
Mulitipy and Divide
Add and Subtract.
So the answer is 5984

To remeber PEMDAS just remember
Please
Eat
My

Aunt

for us it has always been: Please Excuse my Dear Aunt Sally but i guess things are just different.

Pemdas Shmemdas. Shows ya how long it's been since I took a math class.

That might not be a good thing. Do you know the quadratic theorem

Not ringin' a bell ;)
How is it a bad thing? I know what I need to know to function in society. They teach you loads and loads of crap in school that you'll more than likely never use in your life.
I can't think of a single thing I do that ranges beyond simple division in my everyday life.

i dont know. i might pursue a career in something like nuklear physics so i need to know stuff like that and even worse stuff

Okay, maybe it has been far too long since I took a math class, but I still don't follow how you folk get what you're getting.
Could ya break it down for me? Going through it following the 'order of operations,' I still get a number different from yours.
Here's what I got. First, in parenthesis, 3*7=21. Next, in multiplication, 85*67=5695. Then addition and subtraction, 2+2=4; 4-21=-17; -17+5695=5678.
So if you would, please educate me.
And when I put 2+2-(3*7)+85*67 into google, it comes out to that answer as well. As reference, see http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=2%2B2-%283*7%29%2B85*67&btnG=Google+Search
Huh, Pemdas, never heard of that one. We use
Bedmas
Brackets
Exponents
Division
Multiplication
Addition
Subtraction
Lol.

psydd, you are right with that answer. I had used a lovely calculator and then accidently closed it so i didnt remeber the answer. I assumed that crusty was right.

I finaly did the probl;em and got 5,712
first i multiplied the 3x7 then multiplied the 85x67 anhd added them together then subtracted four

2 + 2 - (3 x 7) + 85 x 67
2+2-21+85x67
2+2-21+5695
4-21+5695
-17+5695
5678
I got a different answer this time.. :|
h00pla
02-13-2004, 11:30 AM
well you have to add the 21 with 5695 not with 4
crusty
02-13-2004, 11:40 AM
No. You don't.
4 - 21 + 5695
PEMDAS. Yes, Subtraction is last, but both subtraction and addition go together, in a way.
If you have 3-2+1, you just do it left to right.
That's what I did.
You are wrong.
I am right.
h00pla
02-13-2004, 11:46 AM
no if you do it left to right 3-2+1=2
but if you follow pemdas the answer is 0
the order was put that way for a reason. . . follow it
Danielle
02-13-2004, 01:37 PM
no. Multiplication and division go together nad addition and subtraction go together. You do those operations from left to right. Ex-
4/2+6*7-5
4/2=2
2+6*7-5
6*7=42
2+42-5
2+42=44
44-5=39
39 would be the correct answer.
h00pla
02-13-2004, 04:08 PM
yes that is the answer i would have come up with as the additoin still was on the left side of the equation instead of substracion. but in all reality my algebra 2 teaching has taught me to just act as if subtracting is adding a negative so you basically combine like terms
Diamond187
02-15-2004, 02:38 AM
Think of it this way, by the same logic that
3-2+1=0
-2+3+1=-4
which makes no sense at all, because then
-2+3+1=-(2+2)
which reduces to 4=-2 by cancelling the -2s.
The Brown Cow
02-15-2004, 02:21 PM
You can't cancel those 2's, thanks to the addition sign in the parentheses.
You add and subtract from left to right.

just think of it as a hole. when you combine a positive with the positive you add more dirt, when you combine a negative you are atakkinbg away dirt no matter how you do it the hole will end up as woulkd have another way
