Hehe, usually the court jester was mentally retarded (I mean physiologically, not as an insult) and was just dressed in a stupid costume and let loose in the court. However, he was the only person who could make fun of the king or lord himself without having his head mounted on a pole.

I believe, through my shortlived edumacation on the subject of Jesters, that the jester told jokes and stories about very bad, mean, stupid people, and the king laughed at these stories.

The jesters had to be very smart, because these stories were actually making fun of the king himself, but only secretly.
