Ok... I've been trying for the last 5 minutes to write a post that makes sense...

Don't do it... for now. TRUST ME. If you join like I did after high school, you'll miss out on what could possibly be the best years of your life. Because of my retarded decision, I'll probably start full time college when I'm 25. Most of you ####ers have your bachelors(+) by then.

If you enjoy letting power-happy, mindless robots bound by tradition and pride telling you what to do for 4-20 years, by all means, go for it. Some people, I've found, dig it. Some people fall right into place.

I guess I'm just not cut out for it. I joined so that 50 years down the road I wouldn't regret not giving it a shot, and getting a jumpstart on college. I've been in over two years now and have yet to take one class...

I used to have SO much respect for military. I thought you had to earn privileges, authority, and respect. You should see some of the rejects I have to call my fellow service members.

Sorry for the rant... just my truncated two cents.

If anything, join the Air Force. They are treated the best. They get paid extra to stay in our barracks because they are 'sub-standard'.

We have a mandatory military service here which I was mustered out of on account of my eyes, so the military was never an option to me. But if it had, the paratroops always appealed to me. On the other hand, I have no intention of letting some dipshit with a hat command me around just for the sake of tradition and power, so it all worked out real well.

Yeah, the Marines are separate from the Navy nowadays.

10-06-2009, 03:51 PM
Actually, the secretary of the Navy has two people directly under him in the USN chain of command. The Chief of Naval Operations (Highest ranking USN officer) and the Commandant of the Marine Corps (Highest ranking USMC officer). So yes, the USMC is part of the Navy...

The Coastguard is also part of the Navy during wartime. Which I assume is something like the US being invaded.

Also, do you see a USMC Academy? USMC officers are made at the Naval Academy or college ROTC's. How do I know this? I live next to the ####ing academy, and I'm also in Navy JROTC, so I'm supposed to know this stuff...

Tanktunker
10-06-2009, 04:08 PM
Secretary of the Navy I assume is a civilian position, while Chief of Naval operations is a military position.
It's completely irrelevant what civilian oversees the USMC head, it is a separate organization from the US Navy.

Yes, it is a civilian. But no other branch of the military has two Officers directly under the secretary.

At the level of top officers, yes, the USN and USMC are two different entities, but those two officers are under the SecNav. Not the Secretary of the Navy and USMC. It's like saying one of the big three (Navy, Army, Air Force) aren't part of the department of defense...

Well it depends how you define 'Navy', seeing as there's a civilian logistical and oversight structure which is the Dep of the Navy, and the military structure, which is the Navy.
I assumed he meant that the Marines were part of the military Navy, which is incorrect, if he meant that the Marines use boats, and therefore are subordinate to the civilian boat government department, then sure, they are.

Well fighters aren't really useful right now. In the middle east they aren't posing a threat to our bombers with fighters of their own. At best they're using ground-to-air techniques. Fighters are useless there. Wouldn't be surprised if the Air Force sticks to just bombers and UAVs.

I'm sure there's a ####-ton of fighters floating in the Indian Ocean and in the Pacific Ocean in case China or N-Korea do something stupid, but they aren't doing anything now. They're just sitting on that aircraft carrier.

Nice thread otherwise.

I love the U.S. but I would never want to enlist myself. But if World War 3 starts and if I'm old enough I'd probably go.
Note: Gotta start working out again...

I will serve my country if and when I judge it's motivations and goals to be worthwhile.

And I do not.

I would die for my country, but really, what will me serving get this country? A few insurgent casualties, while I die a painful, brass-covered death?

Because serving in the army = dying NO MATTER WHAT.

No, but serving in the army = wasted years of life, and an increased chance of biopsychosocial harm.

Most of the people I know that served in the Army (IDF), and it's a lot of people, came out as better (more confident, willing to work harder and accept change a lot easier) people and they fully acknowledge that the army was good for them in the long run.
But then most of the secular population enlists, so most of the people start their life at 21-23 anyway, and going to the army doesn't really put you at too much of a disadvantage relative to the rest of the population.

How is sitting in a metal box several thousand feet above the ground, taking orders and pushing a button to fire a missile on potentially civilian targets a thrill? It's not all dogfighting and landing on aircraft carriers, you know.

And how does someone still use the word "funner?" It was hammered into us how wrong that is. I'm talking about excessive force. Do you not go to school or something?

Actually, I found the Marine DI's that came to visit my NJROTC unit really cool. Granted, there's a lot of stuff they couldn't do to us that the could at the Island...

I seriously am thinking about applying for an NROTC scholarship, most likely majoring in Aeronautical Science or Aerospace Engineering.

I've kind of narrowed my choices down to one...

Embry-Riddle, Florida, it's extremly hot for my standards, but It would definably be worth being semi-uncomfortable for 4 years. It's also pretty laid back, for a military college. An old NJROTC guy goes there, he has a desktop and a PS3 in his dorm. It's the ideal college if you want to fly.

But I guess that's off topic. Cause, y'know, I wouldn't be enlisting...

YA CUZ ITZ IN JARHEAD!

Where did you hear they don't have sniper squads?

It's also really annoying how you ask "What branch of the military would you join" and then when people answer, you go "That's the wrong answer, you should join the marines." And I'm guessing you're avoiding my comment because its true, is it not?

Of course they're cool, they're trying to recruit you.

That's not what I mean't...

They did what they were allowed to do with high school students. Which included lot's of screaming and running back and forth, yelling at the top of your lungs or the DI's won't "hear you". It was basically a toned down version of what they can actually do...

They didn't just come in and tell us how much fun it is, they even said, that the Island can be hell.
