This is actually about my sister. Apparently she went to the doctor and they said she is depressed. They are testing her thyroid and for mono (mononuclueosis) and anemia.

She sleeps for 12 hours a day and is still tired when she wakes up. The thing is though she doesn't feel depressed, lonely, anything she is happy.

So here is my question. Could you be depressed (medically/symptom wise) with out actually being (feeling) depressed?

Edit: I just realized I spelled Depressed wrong in the title. Oops.

Depressed, medically, means that your body is working slower than usual.

I'll answer your question like this: Every depressed person who committed suicide was "A very happy person."

Good thing they're also checking for mono, anemia, and thyroid disorders, too. Antidepressants can do some scary stuff.

idk i guess a week or so.

She doesn't have anything "important" (important meaning boyfriend, family issues, no super stressful situations or anything going on) in her life. She is just tired all the time.

She was healthy when I saw her a few weeks ago.

Does she drink from the water fountain? There's a thing you can get from drinking it. I forget the name...

Mononucleosis. They're checking for it.

Yes, this is what im talking about. Also, it is exactly how you described your sister.

Well, with mononucleosis, there's also likely to be a slightly distended belly (minor internal swelling, low activity is a must), sore throat, and cold or flu-like symptoms. My older brother has it. "Has," implying that it never goes away, like herpes, and comes back sporadically.

Is there treatment? (ie drugs) Or is it just one of those things that have to "take its course" and you have to be miserable till you start feeling better?

My last post was a bit wrong, according to WebMD, I'll correct those points, first:
1) You can't get it as an adult, as you are immune past a certain age (WebMD isn't very specific)
2) It causes your spleen to swell.

As far as treatment, they say for you to take pain relievers (Ibuprofen, Tylenol, stuff like that), and to avoid strenuous activity (contact sports, weightlifting, stuff like that), as your spleen is swollen, and it could result in the spleen being damaged. If she has mono, and it hits her hard, that'll be her last concern. Let it run its course, unless you get some ill effect. This article (http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/infectious-mononucleosis-topic-overview) will explain more in more detail than I can. Anecdotal information only goes so far.

Has she been diagnosed with anything?

It's probably that she's depressed physically but not mentally. Her body is tired, worn out, etc. But she's happy, her mood is good and everything seems to be going fine. It might have to do with what she's eating, her activities, etc. I'm sure the doctors will figure out a solution, this isn't something rare.

Tell her to start exercising. If you are sleeping 12 hrs a day, obviously you are going to be in a constant daze. Sleeping too much actually makes you more tired.

The answer to the thread is yes. However she may or may not need medication for it, she may be slightly depressed, or bipolar, which causes her to have mixed emotions.

Also thread title, make this lulzworthy.

Did you read my op? There's an edit that mentions that.

Anyways the tests came back and she in fact has mono. ): Oh well.
