View Full Version : Hey, any Europeans want to meet me?

Mods, if there's a better place for me to post this than spamcrap, please move for my benefit :D
As my trip to Europe draws near, I am seeing how unreliable other Americans are. It looks like I've got no one to tour Europe with, and my flight home is few weeks after my last class. Which means, I essentially can go anywhere in Europe, so long as I can get there by train/bus in a relatively short time, and as long as I can get back to Rome in time for my flight.
My last class is on June 28th, and I fly back on July 10th. So, if there's any Europeans here who want to meet me, now is the best time. I've got a lot of money saved for this trip, so I'm not going to be short on cash. (Doesn't mean I want to waste any). I'm really hoping to find some alternative to shipping the majority of my stuff home, then living out of a backpack for two weeks. I also think it would be really cool to meet some people from XGen.
Any takers?

You know I can just "miss" my flight claiming I didn't know about timezones, and get a free ticket on a later flight.
It happened to me in Denver. I had to stay in a hotel.
Wait, I'd miss my connecting flight to Dallas. Would they give me tickets to another flight there too? Or would I have to buy new tickets..

DarkReality

We should totally meet up and have wild sex.
Or just do stuff. I'm not quite sure what you had in mind for meeting up, I mean, you're probably not gonna ride for a few hours by train, stop by for lunch and leave again. I'd offer just coming to Rome for a weekend but seeing how I've already been twice, it's not so tempting.
I don't think it would be too creepy to hang out with someone 5 years younger than me anymore, though >_>
Say, how expensive are the train rides inside Europe? (e.g. Rome to Germany) Are they relatively cheap?
DarkReality
04-29-2009, 02:17 PM
Not very. Although it depends, there are good deals between large cities (for example, there were several connections between large German cities for as little as 20 Euros last Summer, which is about as cheap as travel gets). But just blindly buying a ticket over the counter? That can be pretty expensive. You'd probably be better off flying.

I dunno about Europe but a 1 hour ride from Zurich to Basel in Switzerland was a good 80 francs.
EDIT: No that was 2 tickets, but 40 francs for Zurich to Basel 2nd class is still alot D:

What about a train pass? Isn't it cheaper to do that, since I'll be there 7 weeks anyway?
Also, how old are you again? Since I'm going into my Junior year, virtually every acquaintance I have is between 19 and 23. I actually wanted to see Germany more than Spain or France. Not sure why, as Italy/Spain is my heritage, but if there's stuff worth seeing and a cheap way to get there, I might actually go in that direction.
The only problem is that my VISA might not cover Germany. I don't know what the rules are, but I think the VISA was needed because I'm taking classes, instead of just being a tourist.

If you've got a Visa into one EU country, chances are you can visit all of them. And even if you can't, then just check in at your embassy, a US citizen should have no problem obtaining one.
I'm not sure about train passes, the Interrail ticket I know is only available to semi-permanent residents (6 month stay before being allowed to buy it, I think?). As implied, I do very little long-range train travel, so far RyanAir has been pretty cheap when booked far enough in advance.
Wow, according to RailEurope.com, Rome to Frankfurt is just shy of 300 dollars. http://www.raileurope.com/ seems to be a pretty comprehensive guide on train travel in Europe.

I didn't realize you have to book so far in advance when taking a train... Let me check out plane tickets.
Edit: A roundtrip flight to frankfurt is ~$120. I can afford that. The question now is what I can do in Germany. Is there anything to do there, or would it be:
Get lunch, have a discussion about the pros and cons of Capitalism, then fly back to Rome.
I'll keep it in my options.

As to what you can do: mostly look at stuff. I'm not much of a touristy person, so I have no idea what kind of attractions Germany offers (apart from shitloads of castles and ruins). Anything we've got, the US probably has in bigger anyway. Your best bet would be browsing through a tourist guide.

So, this might be a bit more difficult. I told me dad, "I have a friend in Germany" and he started freaking out telling me about the dangers of internet, so I made up some story about a friend from a class who moved to Germany. I don't feel like explaining the difference between chatrooms and forums that you're an active member of for three years, when it takes him thirty minutes to figure out how to look at pictures of my dancing that I sent to him.
I wonder what he would say if he found out I met Hunter online.

(4/30/2009 3:29:25 PM) Barry: I really would like you to travel with a partner over there. However, if you insist on going it alone, I think you'd better hear what goes on over there from someone who has been there and done that.

(7:54:55 PM) Jared: Paying for a two week tour guide?
(7:54:58 PM) Jared: ...

(7:56:40 PM) Barry: he toured Europe by himself?
(7:56:47 PM) Jared: With his brother
(7:57:02 PM) Barry: it's like bear country

(7:57:34 PM) Barry: I'd still talk to greg and check in with Dominic
(7:58:00 PM) Barry: also look to see if you can train in or fly in somewhere and meet up with an organized tour

You'd swear we were all Barbarians here. From the way people here go on, the worst thing you have to fear in Europe is losing your wallet, in America it's getting shot.
Two guys I live with went to Barcelona a while back and had their passports stolen, and being Chinese couldn't come back to Ireland until they got a new one.
Basically, there are places where pick-pockets are fairly prevalent, but you'll get that anywhere. You've no significant danger otherwise.

from wiktionary:
While racism is, per se, usually tied to race, some speakers will (controversially) use the term in other cases as well:
The reason for this was the general prejudice (read: racism) against gays among “straight” people; the government simply didn't want the public to be appalled by posters and TV adds with “queers”.

Wikitionary is not as good an actual dictionary, and an actualy dictionary will tell you that racism is about race.

Gosh! I can't believe in my banning I missed a topic so relevant to me!
If I wasn't underage banned, I'd offer you to come stay with me, but I'm living with my parents and still in school at that time (don't finish till July 22nd). However, I've been to a lot of central Europe, and loved pretty much every part of it! I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself. When I'm 18 and living away from home, I'd gladly meet a number of members around here.
I don't recommend you come to Britain though. It's nothing special, really. Stay in mainland Europe, where the weather and food are much better. Italy and France are probably my two favourite places in Europe, I've also been to Germany (really nice, couldn't drink but still enjoyed myself), Spain (not really to my liking, they all bugger off at mid day and disappear for two hours and everything's closed and it's impossible to find anywhere to eat), Portugal (spain but much better), the Netherlands (cool), Belgium (cool if you like history), Switzerland (cool I guess but the people suck). I could go on but I can't really be arsed at the moment.

That's actually a good point, though I really wouldn't recommend Scotland to many people, it's really not that nice for the most part. Why would I think it would take place in Estonia? Also, being racist to a nation/country you don't know is quite idiotic and irrational.
Countries and nations are not races, so I cannot be racist towards them.
All I know is that there is nothing good about Estonia, and nothing good has or will ever happen there.
I second this notion.
So, what happened to that "Member Map" we used to have?
Somewhere in the void of irrelevance. It was confirmed that the majority of the members who tagged their location lived on the east coast. (US)
