I've been on Youtube looking for songs from the 90's and the early 2000's that I can recognize from my childhood. I found a couple of bands that I loved, but never knew the name to! I found out these were my favorites:

Weezer
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Nine Inch Nails
Hoobastank
311, etc...

I dislike this new rock that has been coming out. I used to love Linkin' Park but their new stuff just sucks.

This is what I grew up listening to, what were some of you're favorite artists?

Red Hot Chili Peppers, I used to like them a lot. Don't listen to them much anymore.
Barenaked Ladies I listened to a lot when I was smaller too, they are still good to listen to from time to time.
Greenday has it's own phase although I couldn't care less about them now
Breaking Benjamin I still listen to every so often.
Bad Religion, I only had a few songs by them back then and now I have a lot more. Turns out their older stuff sucks compared to the newer stuff.

Ah, Tool. Another favorite of mine.

I grew up on a lot of my Dad's alternative Country music, and it really grew on me.

The music I listened to by choice was classic rock. And exclusively classic rock. I was one of those stupid twelve year olds who thought all music made past the year I was born was utter trash and shouldn't be listened to ever. So obviously I listened to Led Zeppelin, The Doors, and Iron Maiden from the ages 9 to 13. I then discovered Alice Cooper, and I feel that was my first step to musical diversity.

When I was really young I grew up on whatever crap was on in the charts and on the radio. It wouldn't have been uncommon for me to listen to the likes of Hanson and such.

Later years I found bands like Slipknot and Korn and Linkin Park who seemed to offer something a bit more to me than the crappy pop music. I soon realised this was too far off the other extreme and moved into more casual, listenable music.

WHAT?

My taste in music has only shifted slightly in 10 years. A lot of it is the same as it was then.

also, probably to Matt's disdain, I'm listening to a 1990 Bad Religion song.

I don't think any band ever has gotten better over time.

I like foghat and the scopians from back then. These days for rock I like three days grace, a little of greenday, and some christian rock bands.

Not true. Some bands take on a more "mature" sound, if you know what I mean. One band that comes to mind is a ska band called Mustard Plug. They were sort of a silly band that played silly songs, but eventually started to sing songs of a more serious style, but still kept that bit of silliness. They just learned how to make songs with more flow and with less meandering. They're about as good as they ever were, maybe a little better.

Another example that comes to mind is Alkaline Trio. They always have lots of lyrics, but on the first album the lyrics were crunched in early and there were a lot of instrumentals at the end. The album kicks ass, it's just lacking a bit.

For the most part, however, bands either stay consistently good or get worse over time.

Generally the album you first like of a band is the best one.

Radiohead.

Actually, most genre switching bands could qualify, depending on your tastes in music. But Radiohead is probably the most objective example of this.

I'm saying it as a general idea, not a solid proof.

This was the music my big brother listened to, and he would leave his radio on in our room so it stuck with me.

Here's the flowchart of my music taste:
birth --> big mountain + bob marley + james taylor (what my parents listened to) --> assorted classic rock radio stations --> black sabbath + iron maiden (on recommendation by some friends in 6th grade) --> starting to visit internet forums --> power metal (yeah... gotta love middle school) --> haste the day + metalcore --> cousin showing me the song 9mm & a three piece suit --> catch 22 + reel big fish + thrice (thrice from a music video on fuse) --> discovering punknews.org --> streetlight manifesto + rise against --> the gaslight anthem + hot water music + against me! --> defiance, ohio + andrew jackson jihad --> my current mix of ska, punk, folk-punk, metal, and other assorted things.

I've practically grew up on a lot of Beatles songs, which obviously got me to enjoy them. Although, I still remember some bands back then such as Green Day, Nirvana, and Smash Mouth.

Hm... Radio Oz/Radio Disney until around 10. Besides that, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd (the latter I never really liked until recently), Queen, Jethro Tull, Soundgarden, Social Distortion, the Clancy Brothers (my dad had a tape of theirs he always listened to until he lost it).

I always had a thing for electro, though. It was on the rise when I was in elementary school, and a few songs played on Radio Disney quite often.

I mostly grew up to Blues Traveler, Sublime, Bob Marley, and The Beatles on my dad's side, and on my mom's side was the Thompson Twins, Duran Duran, and all that other 80's stuff

Foo Fighters

I liked Nirvana, Gorillaz, Foo Fighters, Michael Jackson. I always found it so confusing that my brothers and sister knew pretty much any song being played on TV or the radio.

Have you ever listened to The Colour and the Shape?
It's much better than anything they've done since.

My dad and relatives have always been rockers/metalheads so I grew up on a mix of both.

The first bands I ever heard were KISS, Metallica, Megadeth, and Iron Maiden. From there it expanded into all those older bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Dio, Judas Priest and so on.

Lots of Beatles, and some U2, Seal, and some other similar bands. Barely listen to them anymore, this was just what my parents listened to.
There was about a year in 4th or 5th grade when all I listened to was the pop crap on the radio, but then I realized "wait, this stuff sucks."

Now I listen to a lot of metal. Not sure how to classify it, but there's a bunch of Melodic Metal (stuff like Kamelot, Symphony X, and Scar Symmetry which is Melodic Death Metal), some Thrash, and probably one or two other kinds. I need some help classifying these bands (I'm sub-genre retarded here...):
All That Remains, Trivium, Firewind, August Burns Red, and As I Lay Dying.

I don't think any band ever has gotten better over time.

I think most of them have...one easy example is The Police.

1st album: Good
2nd album: Very Good
3rd album: Phenomenal
4th Album: Good
5th Album: OK

I could go on...Steely Dan's best album is either Pretzel Logic, Katy Lied, or Aja; 3rd, 4th, sixth, respectively.

I think he means must that's been more recent, any album from their golden years is fair game, but recently it's been even more commercialized and all that jazz

Though I'm still technically growing up, when I was 10 or so, I listened to a lot of punk#/rap/pop/whatever garbage big names in music cranked out. Then I grew out of it, and now I listen to a lot of IDM/crossover electronic music.

For The Police, their 5th album, Synchronicity. Then I downloaded the other 4 in order.

For Steely Dan, I heard "Bodhisattva" on the radio, looked it up, and downloaded their first - Can't Buy a Thrill.

The Dead Kennedys probably go Great-Good-Good-Good-OK. I heard the 4th album, "Frankenchrist", first.

Korn, Metallica, System of a Down, Linkin Park, Beastie Boys, and Kiss.

Hah, that's better than most punk bands, who are more like this:

Awesome - Really Good EP
then they break up.
-or-
Awesome - Really Good - Awesome - Terrible

Metallica will always be my favorite, because they're the first band I listened to. I pretty much listen to 80's and 90's music, todays music is on a dramatic downfall IMO. Whatever happened to the times where good bands were recognized??? Take Annihilator for example, not many people know who they are but they influenced alot of bands/artists to this day.......Trivium, Children Of Bodom, Dave Mustaine and alot of others. I don't hate all of the new bands, I actually like some of them(Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed, System Of A Down) but the 80's music will always be the best in my opinion.

Up until I was 11 I only listened to what my dad and my brothers listened to. Which ended up being a peculiar brand of classic rock and hip hop. During middle school I began embracing jazz, blues, and classical, and delving more into classic rock and hip hop. So far in high school I've adopted a lot of latin and marching band music into my tastes.
