Today is the 10th Anniversary of the Shootings at Colombine High School in Colorado. Some of you may not remember it but I can't believe it's been 10 years. Does anyone have any thoughts or comments?

I was just a wee lad when this happened. I don't remember hearing anything about in on the news when it happened.

Remember how they were caused by video games?
Good times.

Well, if I was religious I would say god save their souls or something along those lines.
I'm not.
So I will just say: wrong place, wrong time?
It's also really cool how video games got blamed not cuban gun dealers...
I remember in kindergarten my teacher was talking about some shooting. I didn't even understand what happened.
It wasn't until a little later that I actually understood...

I was a youngin' but I sort of remember people talking about it. It's pretty sad, I watched something on it awhile ago and you got to see people being shot and the two kids walking around geared up in guns. I feel bad for the families, but hopefully this won't happen again.

What the hell makes it the first major shooting?
Unless by major, you mean "an additional 5 people dead".
Besides, I don't think it was that tragic to continue uhh celebrating its anniversaries.
I mean, look at this one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beslan_school_hostage_crisis That's a hell of alot worse.

You gotta appreciate the irony... A big day for potheads, Hitler's birthday, and also the day Columbine was shot... It's one hell of a day, and two out of three aspects are negative.
Anyway, why are we talking about Columbine, it was a horrible day.

Yea, hitler's birthday is the only positive aspect of the day. XD

What I find interesting is how quick people are to blame the wrong thing for what caused such horrific events, or create myths surrounding the events.
These kids were textbook examples of mental illness, only they had the ability to make it pretty terrible. It wasn't games, or bullies that made them do it. They did it because they were screwed up in the head.

What do you mean? It was OBVIOUSLY the United States' lack of decent gun laws.

Well... it's just more of psychology as to why people do that. It's in several parts sensationalism and also part of the grieving process. Directly for the people that are right there, and indirectly through a sense of "it could happen here" for people far away.
When something happens like that, people need something to blame, and it's far easier to have a target for grief and rage than to put it on something that can't be helped. If it was because of videogames, or bullies, or music, or anything like that... something could have been done. If we could just get rid of those things then it would all be alright and we wouldn't have to worry.
But if it's just something that happens... when the only reason is that some kids just aren't right in the head... it's unbearably hard for people to accept. So while they're still in shock, they latch onto whatever explanation is thrown up because if they didn't, they end up feeling powerless... and then by the time the incident has cooled down enough to think rationally again, they've already internalized that thought of "It was the fault of <x>!", because they didn't have to go through the full grieving process.
I'd be willing to bet quite a lot that the people directly affected by Columbine have accepted the real reasons behind it much more than the rest of the nation has.

I was only 4, but I remember my mom crying and trying to call her friend whose daughter went there. She was one of the survivors.

I was 9, and coming home from church when my mom was listening to the radio, and was telling me and my brothers about it. She was scared it would happen at my school.

Yeah and it was the start of all the kill others than kill myself kind of shootings. Think about it all other school shootings (or big shootings in general) usually the shooter kills people and then kills him/herself. We talked about it in psychology last year. I think they reason they kill themselves is to escape prosecution or something. I don't remember.
