I'm speaking generally from people I know in real life, like my sister. She liked rock and said rap was gay and all that, but once people started liking rap, she was like "Zomg wtf Rock's gay, rap's the best".

You should realize that there is a very large number of people that like rap music. From downloads to album sales. In numbers, probably close to billions.
rap is the music that makes everyone a gansta which can turn into deadly results.
ahahahahahahahahahahahahaha Stereotype.

I'm not much of a rock music fan, but that is also a complete stereotype.
Thats why i listen to electronic music
That's the reason why? Because you don't want to turn into a bad influence, or turn into some kind of tennager who plays their music full-blast in their car?

Techno is gay, but Dubstep, Breakbeat, IDM, House, Glitch, Ambient, etc... are not. The problem with techno is it's constant use of high-pitched sawtooth waves, they get incredibly annoying. As for you thoughts about metal/scream, the instrumentation is almost ALWAYS top-####ing-notch, too bad the singers (usually) ruin it. Good news is that most of the time they fill in a gap in the sound that the guitars and bass don't reach.
Freddy
04-05-2009, 09:38 PM
I prefer rock in general. I won't go into any subgenre, but diefinitely more than rap.
The biggest reason is because rap is amost entirely lyrically driven. Yeah there's a beat, but that's always an afterthought. It's the lyrics that determine whether the song is any good. And if I don't like what the lyrics are about then I really don't care about the song. There's nothing else left that can like because there's nothing else left to like.
Rock is more dependent on the music, with lyrics still being important but usually being the costar to the music. The lyrics can totally suck but if the guitarwork is good enough then it doesn't matter. Or maybe it's sung really well or whatever. If one part of it isn't too great, you can still like the song for another part of it.
Now this isn't to say I hate all rap. There are songs that I like, usually because I like the lyrics. The vast majority has no apeal to me at all though.

Music is all personal choice anyways and to say someone is stupider for listening to one type over another isn't fair. Yes you can make comparisons and say a lot of below average people listen to rap but it's not because they listen to rap they are below average, but that's up to debate.

Let's also say that Mainstream Rap is the only thing that overgeneralizes the genre, and that some opinions are invalid because there are never a 'few' good songs, because there are a lot. As in, more than you can count on your hands.

Rock is better since you can understand the lyrics.
I can understand the lyrics, but do you really think if you could understand them you'd like rap better?

Rock and rap are both good. To say one sucks you have to be pretty ####ing stupid, and not have heard any good music from that genre.

Alright, I am going to weigh in on this.
I prefer rock, generally, but not all rap is for "retarded players". (or similar)
While I do not like the vast majority of rap, I'd like to introduce you all to this little thing called Nerdcore. There are some fantastic artists who create and play Nercore music. Personally, I am a fan of MC Lars and MC Frontalot. More so the former.
I don't want to be "that guy" who thinks overly highly of himself, but I think I'm fairly safe in saying I'm no retarded player. (I hope so, at least.)
And I like a subgenre of rap that is often overlooked in discussions (and generalizations) about rap music. The real "retarded players" are the ones who generalize and say all rap sucks.
I now await the angry responses of normally sensible and intelligent posters. (Like someone who calls people retarded players.)
Also, inb4nerdcore doesn't count

I like to llisten to all genres of music. So that means both rock and rap are to my musical liking.
It's all about finding the right artist that can play that particular style of music good.

Unless the "rapper" in question performs the beats/etc. it's not music, it's theft.
EDIT: I looked up MC Lars on YouTube, and well, I have to admit it's better than normal rap. Not because it contains any musical merit, but instead of making me angry, it made me laugh hysterically at it's low level of quality.

Rock definitely, specifically alternative rock. Rap's OK but I only like one rap artist, Eminem. Worst forms of music in existence are R&B, manufactured pop (thanks very much Mr Cowell ¬¬), country music and grime.

Very much so a fan of both (SOAD and TechaNina being teh greatest shiz eva), It's impossible to really lump all rap and rock together. Somes good and some sucks ass.
Let's just say this for any rap haters out there.
When you gets a little bit older, and start hittin clubs wit teh ladies, you gon be very happy rap exists.

The things you say that I understand are wrong, the rest is gibberish.
Screamo is a bastard child of hardcore and emo (which was originally a kind of hardcore but now its become a steaming pile of shit) music, and it needs to be dragged behind a shed and shot.

screamo (synonymous with skramz) is bands like pg. 99, Envy, Saetia, etc. Skramz started back in the early '90s when the emotional hardcore/emocore/emo movement (a la Rites of Spring, Moss Icon) started mixing it with some hardcore and making these huge cathartic intense records.
when people say "screamo" now, it seems to me that they refer to anything and everything with screaming. or they talk about bands like the Used or something who really are more like pop than emo.
don't be generalizing my screamo. some of that poop is really good.

But we need our genre names to have elitist arguments and pass judgment on bands we've never listened to.
As for rock vs. rap, it depends greatly on the subgenre. I can't stand most pop-rock, but I enjoy classic and progressive rock.
As for rap, the typical Lil Wayne or Jay-Z stuff is awful, but I can always seem to find an artist who raps about something at least semi-understandable and puts some above average thought into the creation of their non-lyrical elements.

Maybe, but his music still features some of the most confusing and incoherent lyrics ever.
"So don't believe everything your earlobe captures, it's mostly backwards... Unless it happens to be as accurate as me. And everything said in song you happen to see -- then actually, believe half of what you see, none of what you hear, even if it's spat by me. And with that said, I will kill EXPLETIVES dead."
- Jay-Z, Ignorant EXPLETIVE
"Scope honey from the whip. Jump out like 'YAH!' Who the EXPLETIVE ya with?"
- Jay-Z, I Know What Girls Like
"No room service just snacks and EXPLETIVE."
- Jay-Z, Hey Papi
