View Full Version : What are your favourite albums?

For me, it's really hard to pin down my absolute favourite album, so I'm just wondering what everyone's favourite albums are, or maybe add a link showing what the highlight of the album is to you.. Out of my collection, here's the ones that really stand out to me.

Beck - Modern Guilt

I've been a Beck fan for most of my life. My dad was also a big Beck fan when he was younger. One of my earliest memories of him was him singing Loser to me when I was three years old. My dad had the first two albums by him, and they were great, but they had problems. Beck knows how to write a great song, but for every great song, there's a lump of uncoordinated garbage launching a genocidal assault on my eardrums. I stepped off Beck for a few years until he released this gem. There's not a bad song on it. It's just consistently Awesome.

Broken Social Scene - You Forgot it in People

My first experience with Broken Social Scene was the 2006 Juno awards. For those unfamiliar with them, it's like The Grammys for Canadians. Anyways, the bands up for Alternative Album of the year were Broken Social Scene, Hot Hot Heat, Metric, Tegan and Sara, and The New Pornographers. At the time, I was in love with Hot Hot Heat, Metric, Tegan and Sara, and The New Pornographers. Of course, when Broken Social Scene won the award instead of accepting the fact that they make good music and maybe giving them a listen, I hated them with every fibre of my will for ruining all my favourite bands chances of acclaim.

Two years later, my friend convinced me of buying this masterpiece. A true gem. I feel sorry for ever doubting these wonderful musicians. The CD is magnificent, emotional, and for some reason really captures the essence of being a Teenager, at least to me, anyway.

Calexico - A Feast of Wire

Mariachi bands usually aren't associated with the cool guys. This is where Calexico. Let me paint you a picture. It's midnight. The moon is out, a coyote is howling. You see a bonfire in the distance. You've been in the desert for two days now. You don't know if you've crossed the border yet. Whether they are Mexican or Californian, you don't care. You will die soon. You need water. You're so close to them, the campers around the fire. The music is more clear now. You hear twang of a steel guitar, flat, yet somewhat dark vocals. And then something more unconventional... Is that a trumpet? You are intrigued and join the circle and listen in, they don't mind. When it's over you clap and cheer. You feel revitalised. You didn't need the water at all.

That was a metaphor for my utter lack interest in anything southern music had to offer to me, a wasteland if you will. My dad got me into these guys, by blaring All the Pretty Horses throughout the house for a month straight. A Feast of Wire is probably their best outing. Their newer albums are good, but I prefer their old, mariachi influenced sound. Quattro is probably their most accesible tune, and that's what you'll get.

Corb Lund Band - Five Dollar Bill

As I'm writing this, I realize how much of an influence my dad has been on my music preferences, I should have told him. My interest for Corb Lund has waned over the years, but I still respect him for showing me that mainstream country music can be good. My general opinion of Country music is that it has potential, but most of it is severly underplayed... While horrible poppy country with over the top commercialism and insubstantial lyrics take up most of the radio time. Corb Lund needs more respect, is what I'm trying to say. His brand of country is much less about whining about how your an alcoholic or your wife left you then most country artists. Each of his songs has a different story, and they're all great. And his voice is pretty monotone. Something I enjoy for a country singer. Most of 'em get too emotional.

Hmm. I have a lot more favourite albums than I expected. I've got a huge writup planned for my Godspeed You! Black Emperor albums. If this gets any responses, I'll write it. But, I don't wanna waste all that time for nuthin'. So, anyways. Xgen Music forum, what albums put you in ecstasy?

Colors by Between the Buried and Me
A metal album that's sooo much more than just that. In addition to really well played metal, this album showcases the band members' technical & songwriting proficiency in many genres of music.

Kind of Blue by Miles Davis
Do I even need to explain? THE essential jazz album. If you don't own this, you need to.

Reinventing Axl Rose by Against Me!
A folk-punk classic. Extremely singalong-able, just awesome stuff.

Rain Dogs by Tom Waits

Dude I freakin' love you.

I've been scanning the thread for mention of some Waits albums.

My favourites would be between Rain Dogs, Heartattack & Vine, Small Change and Closing Time.
Closing Time is an absolute masterpiece of an album but it doesn't really reach the same depths his other albums do.

Metallica represent everything bad about the metal genre. Quite honestly I'd rather do just about anything than listen to one Metallica album all the way through - I mean that. I cannot possess hatred for any one band more than I hate Metallica. Ya know the "Barbie Girl" song? That band > Metallica. I mean it. I'm completely serious. I'm more than just internet serious. I'm serious. This trumps being cereal, even.

BTW, The Who are arguably the 2nd or 3rd greatest rock band ever, and in my mind a Top 5 band of any genre ever, and Metallica, even if I didn't hate them as much as I did, wouldn't come close to touching them. Metallica needs to die. Now.

Slow? Boring? Have you listened to anything after 1969? Or just what you were spoonfed by Guitar Hero?

You're just trashing them because you don't like them. Obviously, your opinion doesn't matter to someone who would like them no matter what you say, so I should just stop arguing with you. No matter what you say, they're my favorite, and you can't convince me otherwise.
Just like you can't convince me ####tallica is actually making music, not turds.

Lars is a fantastic drummer.
OK, I'm sorry, but if fantastic drumming is now stomping your feet quickly while bashing your tom drums as fast as you can, then drumming is now dead.

If you want to hear a good drum part, listen to the intro to Tom Sawyer by Rush.

For a good drum part, I suggest Where I End and You Begin, by Radiohead.

Sorry, CriticalX, you are wrong in every way possible. I quoted this one because it's the utmost wrongest wrong, wrong, wrongety, wrong statement I've ever read on this forum.

Seriously.

You are making metal sound like poop.

This is my opinion: Metallica did have a few good and amazing songs, but not all of their songs are orgasmic, and not all of their albums kick ass. In fact, their only good songs were back when they had Cliff. Everything past that pretty much sucked except for the Black Album which had a few okay ones.

And please tell me why a forty year old man is still "singing" in a band? They suck now. End of discussion.

Snarr, you get more thumbs up than I can count.

Particularily for GY!BE, mewithoutYou, Sigur Ros, and Neutral Milk Hotel.

BTW, how is Boris? I've been meaning to check them out for a while.

I guess then I'm not a true, die-hard, obsessive Metallica fan. A bad thing? No.

Slayer is better, Lars can't drum for ####, They play too slow.

CriticalX

Well of course they are slow, in some songs... Not all bands like to make every god damn song sound the same.

Phil Collins is for the win.

Yes, Lars obviously has no drumming talent.

And whoever that was in The Who must have anger issues because he smashed a guitar through a speaker after concerts.

"LOOK HE PLAYS FAST HE MUST JUST WHACK RANDOM DRUMS".

No.

Also, Ghecko, only SOME of their songs are slow.

Diversity? Unheard of.

Some of their slow songs are alright, like Fade To Black, which speeds up tempo.

And I think I understand why Mr A said that Hetfield screams. It's because in some of their old songs ... that's what he actually does. He yells and shouts like a retard.

Those are the ones I don't like, which is probably why Mr A said they suck. If you still don't think he screams then I'll give you some songs of him screaming.

Jesus Christ, I hope you're kidding. If you're not, then stop being pathetic. "Mommy! He smashed his guitar! D=" Guess ####tallica must really have issues, considering they sing about some pretty angry stuff.

"LOOK HE PLAYS FAST HE MUST JUST WHACK RANDOM DRUMS".

No.

I didn't say he whacked random drums. I'm just pointing out you're not a fantastic drummer when all you do is smash tour toms and stomp on your bass drums.

Let's get down to the real point of this argument.

You hate "####tallica".

YANc and myself hate The Who.

It's called opinions. If you want this petty argument to be over with, accept that people have their own opinions, and you have no right to judge. If I remember right, you started this little ####fest by editing my quote and flaming my musical tastes by calling all Metallica albums a pile of ####. No matter what you say, chances are your ridiculous argument shall not convince us otherwise.

You are wasting your time.

Favorite albums? Hm.... I have a few that stand out.

(in no particular order)

Alkaline Trio- Goddamnit
A solid album released by a band that had no name at the time. The tracks are a bit lacking in terms of lyrics, but all but one track make for a good listen.

Catch 22- Keasbey Nights
A perfect ska album, not many ska bands can top this album. It started the career of several members that went on to another great ska band, Streetlight Manifesto, while other members stayed to produce 2 more [good] albums. This album is a cornerstone of late 90's third-wave ska.

Reel Big Fish- Turn the Radio Off
This is one of the albums that has the power to top Keasbey Nights. This album is definitely one of the most memorable during the third-wave ska movement of the 1990's. In 1996, this album, especially a song called "Sell Out" were playing on the radio all of the time. That is, until ska died and became what it is today. It was good while it lasted, and this album stands strong.

Bad Religion- Against the Grain
That's right Grimreaper, the album you gave me has become one of my favorites. Seventeen (well sixteen) fast paced songs, many of them not reaching the two minute mark. At first they all sound the same, but listen more and hear the lyrical genius that is Bad Religion. This band started when the members were around 18 years old, they are now 44. It just goes to show how good they are.

Flogging Molly- Drunken Lullabies
What's the most unique band in my library? Without a doubt, it's Flogging Molly. How many punk rock bands have a guitar, a banjo, an accordion, and a fiddle? This album has varied songs: some are slow, others have a punk rock sound, some are accordion heavy, and all retain a sound unmatched by any other band.

Also, diverting a flame war.

"Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables" by the Dead Kennedys is a very good album. How can you not love songs like "I Kill Children", "Stealing People's Mail", "When Ya Get Drafted", or "Drug Me"?

alright, i have to bump this thread to add an awesome album

New Chautauqua by Pat Metheny

This album was like, perfect. my favorite is the last track, because it's all cool and stuff
and later i learned he basically overdubbed everything himself, he played the bass, and the guitars (both electric and acoustic). I thought that was cool because that's prettu unconventional for a jazz album (even though this is unlike any jazz album i've ever heard). He sounds like a 3 man band
