Yes, this is my 2nd favorite thing in math...(no. 1 is variables)

Ok here we go!

Here's an Order of Operations problem:
[(2 + 3) - 4] X 2

To do this to get the RIGHT awnser...remember the order like this:

PEDMAS

or

Please Exuse My Dear Aunt Sally

The reason why they are in bold..is that it is telling you the order.

now, heres the order!

1.Parentheses (Or the () symbols) Anything within parentheses must be done first no matter what it contains!

2.Brackets (Or the [] symbols) must be don AFTER parentheses! no matter what it contains!

3.Multiplicaton(if a number is right next to a problem that includes parentheses, multiply.)

4.Division

5.Addition

6.Subtraction

Now, practice Order of Operations! Do the work on a piece of paper if you have to, but no Calculator!

Here's a sample of how it looks like when the awnser is given.

2 + 3 - 6(5 + 2)
2 + 3 - 6*7
2 + 40-42
42 - 42
0

Actually, parentheses and brackets have the same importance order. The only reason for using brackets is formatting, so that you don't lose track of your grouping by using only parentheses.

Until you get into domains and ranges, in which case a parentheses or bracket would indicate whether the upper/lower bound is an open or closed bound... but that's not with operations, so it doesn't matter.

They only serve the same purpose with regards to order of operations. In most other uses, the difference between a bracket and a parenthesis is extremely important.

I just remember BEDMAS as you know, like the Mass of my Bed... I actually was away the first day my class learned BEDMAS, so I HAD NO IDEA what they were talknig about when I got back... and I got back on a test day... Lucky me!

I live in the USA and I use BEDMAS....

You forgot to add in to do the multiplication and divison and addition and subtraction from left to right.
