Tileset & Themes Ideas
-Mirage Tiles: Origionally designed specifically for the "Desert" theme, these tiles would dissapear as your player got near. Mirage Weapons would also be avaliable, taunting users as the fail to grab these fake weapons that dissapear as they grow nearer. While mirage tiles wouldn't be very useful in many other themes, the same principle could be applied to make caves: the tiles appear to be opaqe when outside of the cave, but once entered, the tiles vanish to give a full veiw of the inside of the cave. This would make for epic sniping spots and very interesting fights. In the map editor, regular mirage tiles would come with a preset tile to change to when they disappear. But when placing the cave tiles, the creator would first have to creaste the area under the desired location of the cave tiles, and then place the cave tiles on top of the tiles inside the cave. While this would take some heavy programming, I think it would add a lot of intresting twists to the game.
-Overhead Tiles: Similar to cave tiles, these tiles would be walk-underable. However, when under an overhead tile, the tile would act as a second layer to the map rather than a vanishing celing, and would remain opaqe. The first tile idea I had for this was the pipes in the "Factory" theme, some of which you could walk under. But these would also be handy in solving the long-needed second layer on maps. Bridges could be created that were unaccessible when walking below, and buildings could have roofs that players could only access from special stair tiles. I think it would be a much needed addition to sab, and would satisfy a lot of users.
-Water Tiles: Yeah, I'm not the first one to come up with this. Billions of people have asked for water tiles to be added. O well. These tiles are pretty self explanitory: Tiles made to look like real, moving water. These tiles would be different shades to simulate varying depths, and players would be able to walk in certain, shallower depths, though it would slow down their walking speed. They don't have to add all the depths detail, but if the creators of SAB don't add some form of real water tile soon, I think we're all going to lose our minds because of spam overdoseage.
-Breakable Tiles: This idea was origionated in the "Ice" theme, where you would be able to demolish some small blocks of ice with your weapon, unlocking more areas of the map. When broken, the tiles would gradually grow back and have to be broken again. The health of these tiles would be somewhere around that of a normal player, so the bat would break it in 4 hits, shotgun would break it in 3 hits, rail gun would break it in 2 hits, hammer would instantaneously demolish it, etc. Breakable tiles could also be rocks, tables, chairs, bars, cans of toxic waste, planks of wood, glass research tubes, crates, trees, crumbling brick walls, anything like that. For pretty much any given theme, a breakable tile could be added.
-Death Tiles: Origionated from the "Volcanoe" theme, where certain spots of molten rock would hurt you if you stood on them for too long. These tiles would be tiles that players could walk on, but would hurt if stood on for too long. Examples include Spikes, Hazardous waste materials, peices of broken glass, metal grates above furnaces, poison ivy bushes, thorn bushes, piles of unidentified goo, areas of thawing ice where pools of frigid ice water are forming, etc. This is probably the least SAB-like idea I've had, but it's better than limited ammo or other ideas that would turn SAB into halo.
-Mirror Tiles: Nothing too special. Just tiles with mirrors that would show the reflection of players next to it. That's all.
-Portal Tiles: In the current "Office", "Void", "Construction Zone", and "Sewer" themes, there are tiles that look like doors. Of course, you can't enter them, but what if you could? Portal tiles would be tiles that allow you to travel from one portal tile to another. Not only doors would be portal tiles, but also other objects such as glowing warp points, teleportation machines, stairs that dissappear into blackness below, etc. Many portal tiles would have normal tiles that look just like or similar to them to make it tricky for players to find these tiles. For example, the door from the void theme would remain a placeable normal tile, but it would also be turned into a Portal tile. To place Portal tiles in the editor, another tab would be added to the tiles and spawn and weapon placement tabs in the toolbar, reading "Portals". In this tab, the player would select end A of the Portal from a list of portal tiles in a format similar to the pages of normal tiles. When end A is placed, the player can then place end B, selected from this same list of tiles. In the game, when a person enters end A, they come out of end B a few seconds later. New graphics and programing would be needed, such as making the doors open and making the player automatically walk in once they step on a tile, but this could be done in not too horribly long, because I've seen many games with this feature.
-Factory:
A set of tiles for creation of large warehouse-like factories. The set would include metal plated walls, cracked and stained concrete floors, a number of pipes, whether they be on the ground, functioning as walls, or on the celing, as Overhead Tiles. It would also have a different variety of crates, and several odd machines such as cranes, claws that extend from the walls, hooks, and various other box-like presses and machines. It would also include a large area of grated floor, underneath which a furnace can be seen. This would be dangerous to step on for long, making it the Death Tile for the Factory Set. I think it'd fit nicely with the over all hazardous-area theme of many of the other tilesets, such as construction zone and sewer.
-Forest/Jungle:
Pretty self explanatory. it would include large and small trees, some of which's leaves would spread out and function as Overhead Tiles, ferns, bushes, giant mushrooms, leafy/grassy forest floors, and mabey even some water tiles for creation of rivers and ponds. Also, some large boulders would be nice, along with poison ivy and thorn bushes to function as death tiles. While it doesn't really fit with the hazardous feel of the other themes, I think it would make a nice addition, and would go nicely with the construction zone theme.
-Block Party:
Yes, we're able to make neighborhoods already with the current tileset. No, I don't care. I've made several house-themed maps, but have always been annoyed by the lack of typical household items, and outdoor decor. Also, I'd like to see some outside-veiw houses that DON'T look like trailers that were run over by a semi-truck. And the grass tiles of the construction zone theme look like they haven't been watered in years. All in all, I think we need some more domestic tiles to compliment the lazy-sunday office theme. These would include furniture and decor for the inside of the house, such as couches, a tv, a bed, a washer and dryer, and standard kitchen appliances, as well as decor for the outside of the house, such as painted walls, a Cave Tile roof, mulched flowerbeds, sprinkler systems for the grassy lawns, and sidewalks, driveways, streets, and garages. Also, water tiles would be used to create a pool for the back yards of the homes.
-Down Town:
This set would consist of mostly apartment/storefronts and roads, but would also include busted sidewalks, grafitti'd alleys, old basketball courts within low brick walls, and cars parked along the curb of the street. Also, a local park with an old fountain and some deserted benches would be nice, the benches being potential Breakable Tiles, along with some of the old, crubling walls. I'm really not sure why we don't have a tileset for this yet. I mean, who can't imagine a map like this? It just goes so well with the rest of the game. I could even see it as being a fourth theme avaliable to non-labpassees.
-Ocean Base:
Another secret, futuristic, hi-tech headquarters, similar to the void theme. This would obviously require moving-water tiles, and would include new walls for a base in the middle of the ocean, with sleek metal-floors, and a rusty metal deck, with solid sheet metal floors that transition to gridded metal for a veiw of the below ocean. Tiles would be provided for a large circular research pool, as well as other machines and computer-monitors. Then tiles for a beach would be provided, as well as docked boats and rocky bluffs jutting out from the water. And to finish it off, a few various seagull-crap coated wooden poles, along with a rotting dock. The water tiles of the surrounding ocean would be at various depths, and would have transition tiles from the normal shade of ocean water to the dark blue of the icy water if the "Iceland" theme, and to the lighter color of the stream-water from the "Forest" theme, to allow for blending of water tiles between themes. Again, I think this would be a great addition, and would match the SAB hazardous area theme.
-Desert (Suggested by RadiationXV):
Similar to construction zone theme, but with smoother, sandier-looking terrain. This set would include boulders of varying sizes, from one tile to 4x4 tiles. Also, cactuses would be included, the small ones being Death Tiles, as well as animal burrows and various other land obstructions. To add variety to the terrain, peices would be included to make towering sand dunes and small oasises equipped with palm trees, grassy areas, and small pools of clear water. Then, as a small sign of civilization, a small desert research hut could be included, featuring dusty tables of cluttered papers and gear, and grimy new floor tiles that could also be used for various rooms in other themes. Also, mirrage tile versions of these grassy oasises and reasearch buildings would be included to icrease the desert feel.
-Icelands (Suggested by RadiationXV):
Fairly self explanitory. A vast wasteland of ice, with tall cliffs and melting areas, some of which could be included as Death Tiles. Also, floating icebergs and dark-blue water tiles would be included, as well as penguins and whales that would randomly submerge and de-submerge, formung temporary cover from gunfire. Also, Blocks or chunks of ice would be included as Breakable Tiles. Ice caves would be included, with Cave Tile roofs and stalagmites of ice that can be found inside. And as a huge border for the course, giant mountains of rock sticking from the permafrost could be added, forming an easy way to shape the course. And thanks to the transition in water colors, the ocean-base tileset would meld nicely with this.
-Mountain (Suggested by Gamma):
Again, self explanitory. A rocky tileset including various levels of terrain, huge boulders and other obstructions such as Breakable Tile boulders, grassy stone-filled low lands, and dark, stormy mountain tops, only reached by climbing tall, winding paths along the rock face. Various forms of pine trees and other plats could be found as tiles growing along the mountain's edge or paths of the mountain. Also, botomless ravines would make a nice addition to the tile set. The final obstruction would be a few streams and waterfalls that can be crossed via stones that span the width of the stream. I came up with another tileset, castle and phesant villiage, that would go nicely with this, which I will post a description of later.
-Volcano
Creative names, no? Anyways, it's pretty much exactly what the name implies: a Volcanoe-themed tileset. It would include the basic necesities of a volcanoe: Boiling lava, sheets of magma rock, patches of molten-rock death tiles, rivers of lava, burning trees, random fire, you know. The basics. But other than all that stuff, the center of the volcanoe would be a prime area to place the tiles for a magma research facility. This would be similar to the "Ocean Base" theme, but this base would be floating on lava. The walls and floor would be a little more deteriorated due to the extreme temperatures, and the equipment would be a little different, including thermometers, those earthquake-measuring things, tubes of churning magma, and various other devices. The only way to reach this lava-logged research facility is by a deteriorating bridge that reaches from the building to the shore of the lake of fire. The "Mountain" theme would also blend well with this theme.
-Industrial Park
Basically a blend of the "Sewer", "Factory", and downtown themes. This tileset would include long, wide buildings with billowing smokestacks and powerlines weaving everywhere, the cables acting as overhead tiles. towering nuclear powerpland columns would also be included, the top rim of which could be reached by a long latter (new graphics and programming may be needed for latter climbing). Finally, busted up roads and bumpy sidewalks would span the gaps between the buildings. Not the most complex tileset, but then again, neither is the "Sewer" theme.
-Badlands
A blend of desert and mountains. This theme would consist of dusty rock formations and forlorn dirt roads. For those of you who have been to the real badlands, you'll be able to easily picture this theme. Most of these formations would be a dull light grey, but some would have colorful streaks coming from mineral-filled hot springs that would act as death tiles. Small valleys of trees could also be added, the trees' leaves being overhead tiles, and a few small shrubs and plants would be the only other vegitation. The only sign of civilization would be a few run down tourist attractions, many of which are boarded up and forgotten. Once again, not too complicated, but it would make for some interesting maps.
-Cyberspace (Suggested by RadiationXV)
Probably one of the most epic-sounding themes I've heard so far. There would be two separate sub-themes to this one: Virtual database and hard drive.
Virtual Database: The innermost workings of the computer. This theme's main floor would consist of a thin glass-like transparent floor, with a new background of tons of wires and blinking lights and floating 1s and 0s (This background would function like that of the sky islands theme, where it moves as the charactor moves.) The walls would be made of colorful lazers connected by thin posts. Areas of transparent, rounded-pixel fire (Firewalls) would be included as death tiles, as well as more slightly transparent 1s and 0s floating above as overhead tiles. blinking lights would dot the transparent floor, completing the overall virtual, hi-tech look. The final touch would be glowing circles that shoot beams of light into the air that act as Portal tiles.
Hard Drive: The physical heart of the computer. This tileset's ground would be plastic-green and coated in microscopic golden wires and other tiny machinery. Various odd peices of a computer hard drive would dot the stage as obstacles, and raised and lowered areas would be included. Off the edges of the hard drive would be wires and areas to insert usb drives. The background would be the veiw of the rest of the computer below, including various wires, machinery, and other computer parts. Several thin wires sticking out of the hard drive would be destroyable tiles, and shock waves going through exposed wires would function as death tiles.
