Doom 3 wasn't too bad for me. I only got scared at the beginning although I never played it in the dark with full volume on (my parents wouldn't like it :/).

I want to try F.E.A.R though. That girl is freaky.

When I first got to the Sewers, those trash monster things with all the tentacles scared the crap outta me too.

But Doom 3 takes the cake. The entire mood is set by only being able to use flashlight by itself.

Myst. Not really that scary as a whole, but it's still somewhat creepy. You don't need piles of blood and gore to make something scary. That's kinda what wrecks the scary movie/game genre. Oh, the good old black and white days when you could scare people without even seeing anything (like The Haunting), but by the time scary video games came out it was too late. :-\

The first scary game I played was The House of the Dead Arcade. That scared the living #### out of me. But the scariest game I have played was Dead Space. You think something is going to happen, but then it doesn't, then it comes when you think its gone.

You're not exactly trapped on a single island... You do have access to other worlds. And sorry if puzzle/exploration games with huge amounts of back story aren't your thing. And... people can probably tell from my avatar that I like the series.

Nightmare Creatures on the PlayStation. Couldn't stand watching that game, scared the crap out of me when I was younger. Eventually, I came to like it.

Penumbra series for PC. The only thing that takes your mind off the fact that it's scary as hell is wondering why all the male zombies have hard-ons.

Oplex, survival horror mmorpg. Sure, the graphics aren't amazing, but the atmosphere of the game can be pretty scary at points. Like when you exit a building and the tank, leading every single zombie in the city, is right in front of you.

CarnEvil, a 1998 Midway arcade game. Anyway, looking at the zombies getting chopped into some kind of jello-like substance in the Freak Show stage as an 7 year old is a bit... :o

for me Fallout 3 not because of the fact that the game itsself is that bad but the fact that it offers a very real look at what might happen(except for some of the monsters but you get what I'm saying) I guess its just the factor that it could happen not the fact that the game was ment to be terrifying

F.E.A.R 2 is pretty scary. Things pop out in dark hall ways. You end up shooting everywhere than they just disappear.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requim
By far the scariest game i've played, especially when your sanity meter goes down all the way, play it in the dark and you wont sleep for a week xD

Honestly, Nintentdo 64 scared the daylights outta me when I was a kid.

Mario 64
- That evil piano
- Eel in Jolly Roger's Lagoon
- Hazy Maze Cave, in general.

Banjo Kazooie
- Nipper the Hermit crab
- Swimming through a long, narrow, underwater, clausterphobia inducing tube only to be greeted by the end by a giant cyborg waste disposing shark. And you just know you're gonna get eaten.
- Mad Monster Mansion. In general.

DK64
- The Castle level.
- GET OUT!

...

In all due honesty though, now that I'm more mature. I'd say the scariest game I've ever played was Silent Hill 3. Don't know what I was thinking. Also up for consideration is the remake of Resident Evil 1. I've played the whole series except for 2 and 3, so I don't know how much they compare to the remake of 1.

With the green dinosaur guy that captures Diddy Kong? That part scared me as a kid and I think that's the game you are talking about.

Fallout 3, when it's about two in the morning and you can't wait for daylight or anything and you're in the middle of the wasteland and the caution sign is at the bottom of your screen, but you can't see whatever it is that the sign is warning you against.

The Penumbra games are without a doubt the scariest games out there. I don't find games like Resident Evil, FEAR, and Doom to be scary because they take place is a relatively well-lit area, and as fearsome as the monsters may be there are always guns and plenty of ammo laying around to take care of them with. Penumbra, however, is different, because rather than being the predator you truly are the prey and you have to use your wits, rather than your guns to survive.
