View Full Version : Tophat has been banned for a week (II)

This thread has two reasons: I'm getting a bit annoyed by topics being locked simply because they discuss something absolutely unnecessary. Like TopHat's banning. The members who flamed like crazy in that topic were banned themselves, so there's no need to close the topic in an attempt to stop horrendous flaming. And this isn't the only thread this has happened to. There were some potential debates that were simply locked because someone thought they were getting too ugly. Alright, this wasn't exactly turning into a great debate, but the topic locking spree is incredibly annoying. As in "beyond any hope"-annoying and "this could be the reason XGen is boring"-annoying.
Or the discussion on the kid who asked if any gays we're "In here" tonight? That was turning into a semi-decent debate. But noooo, it was locked.
You're being modded because you're being idiots.
That was NoClue's response to the "Vorpals being oppressed" thread with an automatic lock. But threads about games (which are in the wrong forum, I might add) remain unchanged and unmoved, idiots can ask if you can get banned for speaking l33t (which is ALSO in the wrong forum, I might add), and a whoooooole lot of cruddy topics of people acting like idiots remain unchanged. Why? I do not know and I care not to. So what's my point? I don't know, find one yourself. But were they banned for acting like idiots? I mean, sure, Coolryguy was swearing to no end, and so was Randy, but the rest of 'em? Atticus was making redundant topics, but the main reason is still that they were acting like idiots. So... why not just mass ban the entire motherload forum posters? Because I don't feel any incredibly strong aura of intelligence emitting from that corner of the room.
The second reason is I love undermining people's authority. So my reply as it would have looked after NIN's post in part 1 of the topic:
-------
hehe imma get praised...good ****! I do alot more than you ****ing do ABC!
LOL!! ****!!!
dumbarse. I'd tell you to go away, but that seems to have taken care of itself. You do jack.... and jack likes it >_>
also top hat > everyone
Oh yea, let's jump on the bandwagon and praise TopHat. You're reeeaaaal cool.
Did the entire Vorpals society get group banned? I guess this is what the new banning system incites. Mass suicides that only take a single day. Oh well, the thread was hilarious.
And stop with the WTC sigs. I'm serious.
Don't be overly emotional. It's not like they're mocking it in any way. Or what, am I not allowed to put the star of David in my sig because I'm german and the rest explains itself? What happened happened, not much anyone can do about it now, now is there. If they want to make a sig of a mentally handicapped person shooting lasers out of her eyes at the twin towers, let them. If anyone gets "offended" then I suggest they rethink their life a bit and toughen up.
So much for that. And damnit, the topic was closed. Time to make part 2.

I read the first half... too long -.- I agree. The Xgen mods need to take it down a bit. Closing topics left and right would eventually kill Xgen's popularity. Banning members for a day's stupidity isnt very wise either. Some may get pissed off and just dos the crap outta Xgen...

I don't see a problem with the locking of the current threads, but with who is banned.
Although they should be back today, it would be rather nice to see a list of why everyone was banned. Perhaps in this thread, even. Unfortunately, I don't expect this thread to stay un-locked in the future; even though it was made by RDD.
I'm seeing some users with 'banned' under their names for saying "***" for example (MMac). Surely he said something else that would actually merit a banning? That word is not starred out, and seeing it in asterisks and a 'banned' title under a user's name for saying it seems completely unjust. I wasn't on last night, so if anyone can clarify as to why each person is banned, that would help me surely along with others.
I can understand other bannings very clearly, however.

What if they had pics of Auswits in thier sigs will "LOL" written all over it. Its not a matter of being "offended" its a matter of them attempting to get people to argue about thier sigs. Which is exactly what happened. And all this is exactly what they wanted to happen. A big flame war.
On another note NIN is back YAY
Wow, 6 bans. And the forum is much quieter... But on the other hand.... 4 fingers and a thumb.

And what if they did. I certainly wouldn't be one to complain. What if I had a pencil in my sig, and someone happens to be here who had a 5 year old daughter who was raped and killed with a pencil? Does that mean you can't have a pencil in your sig? And don't anyone dare say something about "Oh, that's only one girl, 9/11 was 5000!" By saying that you give human life a value, as 5000 is more valuable than 1. By giving it a value, you automatically turn it into a statistic. And that already degrades that poor girl more than any picture of a pencil ever will.

Well, TopHat is banned because he cursed at moderators in his own strangely humorous way. At least I don't think it was really meant seriously. In any case, Atticus was banned because he kept making threads about Tophat being banned. Ryan is banned because he went berserk and half of his posts were made up of *'s. Dogbert... probably did something too, knowing him. But I thought asterisks were allowed? Were people banned because of these asterisks or because of excessive usage of them? Because honestly, telling us we can use them and then banning people for using them seems a bit... dunno... unfair? :-p
Of course this topic won't stay open for long, and I wouldn't be surprised if I get a day ban just for the heck of it. At least if I were a mod/admin, I'd be pissed off if someone continued a thread that I locked in the form of a new thread. Now that some time has passed, I'm not quite sure why I made this thread at all. I'm far too childish maybe. Or Infantile, depending on how you want to call it. Dunno. Dun care.

Jan. I love you. Well said.
Very well put.. plus, people flipping out over the WTC pictures are being rediculous.. unless it affected you closely, with a family member or something, you have no reason to stop others from posting scenes depicting it.. and even if you did, you still don't have a reason to stop others.. use adblock if you are a whiny *****.

Where do you get off telling someone they hate America and have no respect for human life when they never said it. Do you mock the invasion of Iraq, if you do, you should be offended
I hate people who are against the Iraq war just 'cause everyone else is, and their only reason is 'But they are killing so many people'

In defense of myself:
I did not do any of the modding originally. I was referring to their recent, unarguably idiotic acts.
They weren't banned for stars, but rather the flames that surrounded them.
I didn't lock most of the threads being complained about. Not the video game threads *never saw those*, not the gays topic, nothing. Just all the ones about vorpals that were naught but spam.

I have a value on human life.
Only ones which will be useful in the future deserve to live. Sorry, but that's the way I view it. Do you LIKE crime?
I'm an atheist, because Religion is based on Faith, and Proof denies Faith (or so I've heard) I grew up without religion, and learned Science first. Therefore, I don't believe in religion, although, someday, maybe I will.
I don't "mock" The War on Iraq, I believe that it wasn't a wise choice to do it.
5000 people is nothing compared to the millions that died in the Holocaust. Enough said.
The estimates vary from around 4.1 to 6.0 million, with more recent research supporting an even higher figure
There you go.

Ok I have no idea what the hell you are talking about. And since you hate America and have no respect for human life I dont exspect you to under stand Sept. 11. Personally, I get offended when someone mocks a terrorist event.
Reading what I wrote would be a start to understanding what i said. If it makes it any easier, imagine it was a terrorist who killed that poor girl with a pencil (jesus, this is getting too ridiculous >_<). And I don't hate America. Even if I did, I still would be able to fully grasp an event such as September 11th. However, I see it far more objectively. Maybe because it didn't happen in my country, maybe because I'm a cynical arse, maybe because I see things for what they are. Probably a mixture, with more cynical arse than anything else. But why would you get offended if someone mocks a "terrorist event"? Hell, you'd have to be offended each time a car exploded in a movie, because that's rather common in the middle east nowadays. Although it's nowhere near as "cool" as it is in movies. Given the circumstances and deaths.
Now, I have good reason for not valuing human life
1. We are ecosystem breakers
2. We are mother earths mistake
and I have a right to my opinions. 9/11 was pointless killing, and I understand that, so if you want a better world, don't call me crazy.
I just decided. I love your religion.
Cheese, u post a couple of E3/videogame threads and things get all ****ed up.
Milk, that was only an example. There are far more stupid threads. In fact, those aren't even stupid, I completely forgot that the video game club was gone with all the others as well. I might as well have mentioned the motherload and srpg2 forums and their massively redundant threads. Although banning those members, who make a grand total of 3 posts most of the time, for a day seems rather redundant in itself, because then you get threads along the lines of "OMGWTFLIEK I WUS BANND!°!!1" everywhere. Which warrants more banning. And more threads.
That said, the video game threads were only an example because they were appearing au masse.
He has time after time bashed our country on cheap shots and is now saying that Sept. 11th isnt that bad and I shouldnt be pissed off when someone mocks it. Hes also an atheist that sees no purpose in human life. I dont mock Iraq( I also have no idea where that remark came from on your part)
Alright. time for some justification.
1) I do bash your country, but mostly due to some selected problems. Gun control or lack thereof and Bush are basically my two problems with america. I know there are more faces to it than that. And yes, my bashing was unwarranted sometimes.
2) I did not say sept. 11th wasn't bad. Of course it was bad. People died. That's bad. At least when they die like that. I simply said that it's a bit overblown to get overly emotional over it and getting teary eyed each time you see a burning tower.
3) I do see a purpose in human life and just because I may not share your religion doesn't mean that I'm some pseudo-goth who thinks everything's pointless. I could go on and say that you don't see the true value of human life due to your belief in something greater, but I'll leave that tangent for now.
No need to defend yourself, NoClue. On the contrary, you were one of the only responsibles who gave a reason, apart from NIN I believe. Who probably did the other banning. Making that statement utterly pointless >_< But nothing personal against you.
Was anyone questioning your morals? Or even addressing you? NOPE! So what if 5 million people died in the holocost. Does that mean that anything less than 5 million isnt bad or isnt a crime? Does that mean that its ok to kill people as long as it isnt 5 million people?
No, it means I should be offended by effing shower heads -_-.
Look, see the title under my name? See how long I've been here? All but one month of that I have been in some form of power. Respect the mods/admins decisions, or leave the forum. Nough said. I'm getting tired of this. Very tired. I was effected closely by the loss in NY. I have my reasons. Accept it or leave. Simple enough for you, children?
I'm fully aware that many people were affected, directly and indirectly, and I'm not saying that people shouldn't be. But being overly emotional about it is unnecessary. No one censors games in which you have to hunt Saddam/Osama, or have to guide a rocket through a cave or games about finding WMD's. No one's even offended by them. Cause it's nonsense. But I'm sure those families who lost members due to Saddam during his reign found it anything but humorous. If you're affected, fine, no need to force that upon others, though, as some people simply weren't affected. And that doesn't mean they don't value human life, to come back on JShall's comment.
I agree to to nin, after all this years we didn't notice that the admins and mods were getting tired of us, because of doing all this stupid stuff.
Hold on there, buddy. You've been here for a month. I dunno if you could talk about "All these years". And mods/admins getting tired of us? Waaaait... I could have sworn they're here indirectly because of us...? Give them a break? No one's forcing them. Their job is to make sure these boards stay semi-civil. I never signed anything saying that I'm going to make their job easy. Because ironically, if we do, then they suddenly don't have a job. Throwing us all into a paradox and ending our existance. Well, not really, but that would be interesting.
Look on the bright side, it brought back some life, and if no one locks this (which would be irony at it's best), then this could turn into a really cool thread. Because so far, it's been quite fun to reread.

point: we also are pro-war meaning we kill humans as we create them, and it's basic darwin here, humans are more fit therefore we take over other habitats to support ourselves, im sure the squirrels around the world would give a damn about us if they could live without fear
DarkReality

There's a difference between "more fit" and destroying the ecosystem. Darwinism doesn't speak of a complete take over. Squirells and humans inhabit completely different habitats, meaning survival of the fittest doesn't apply.
And despite everything, we're still the only being that actively destroys the ecosystem rather than only live in it.

darwin wouldn't speak of a complete takeover because nothing would be able to perform a complete take over.

Quite frankly, I don't think he cares. You, for one, are the reason he's been on an outrage. He used to be good-tempered. If you want to see the good temper, why not stop complaining and take responsibility for your actions.
Sorry for singling you out. I know you're not the only one responsible.

But I recall you saying you were going to be rather inactive due to other things going on that were more important. There IS something funny about your banning spree though. I think the difference between right and wrong is sort of a fuzzy line right now. I say we see how long this banning spree goes on and then we start discussing NIN's capability of being an admin on the forums at least. Because someone who gets ticked off THAT easily... needs a vent. And a forum is really the wrong place. Although turmoil is fun. And what these forums need. Woah, I smell conspiracies.
Speaking your mind and persistantly/purpousfly going against what people in charge of the forum say are two different things. This isn't a supreme court case. Posting on this forum is a priviledge, NOT a right. People who have been banned recently for "speaking there mind" either did something we have told them not to or were extremely disrespectful. It's how they presented there "mind" that got them banned, not the fact that they presented it. You people show me/us respect, and we/I will return it.

If you don't believe moderators should be respected for keeping the forums safe and clean (in your own view), then I can't really blame you for being at a standpoint.
Responding with "I don't care if the boards are safe and clean" is fine, but what would lying get you? I think it would be safe to say that you have complained about something and a moderator fixed it at your request (if not, avoid this portion and the next portion of the post). Giving them no respect is simply disrespectful, if that is the case.

It used to seem to me that nin was literally never on for ages, as his posts were spread out by months on end and the orange name did not usually debut in the various forums. However, He has been around. If someone doesn't post, that doesn't mean they're not here. By all accounts, that means I never leave.
What I'd really like to see is the logic behind the "going to far" and "abuse of power". If abusing power means they do what the rules said, their job, then nin's guilty. The moderators (and likely one or more administrators) worked out the banning system to give the forums some actually rule relevance. Before this was put into action, members could call each other every name in the book and only face an edited post. Now there is something being done. Apparantly giving XGen's forum any dignity at all means that he's a raving lunatic.
mattz1010
05-20-2005, 09:12 PM
I think what they mean into abusing is the fact that no admins have been around, and [ no accusations/offense ], but the admins didn't warn anybody, or... slide into the banning system - it was just implemented, heck, I dont even check general. I didn't notice until others were banned. - but, instead, went into full routine of it.
The line was pretty far bent, but I think the line should have bent a bit more for the older members, and a stickied warning in SL - for all n00bs who kept disrespecting the rules. I know the admins don't have time to PM hundreds of members.
If they didn't quickly re-adapt (3-7 days or so) to the new rules, then they would have to take full punishment.
Nor could they exploit the line bending thing, and therefore just spam and post pictures of... ****... Er, you know what I mean.

The banning system was put into place a fair while before people began to be banned. About half a day, as I recall. Mostly this system was ccreated by moderators, who implemented it. It is in multiple threads in General, two of which are stickied. If anyone is going to bother paying attention to the rules, they will seek them out. No one reads a two page pm about why a certain rule has been put in. There are around 1500 actively posting members. If half visit General and read it, that's fine. Word of mouth works too. They should not need forum-wide announcements for this.

When a mod\admin edits out a post(s) that could have led to discussion, and then bans, you have gone too far. Posts are only supposed to be edited when somebody is being ridiculously vulgar or something illegal has been posted.

*points at post for very specific example of abuse of power"
Using power for personal reasons is abuse of power.
Denying culpability for one's own actions is abuse of power.
Demanding respect while simultaneously erroding any reason to deserve respect is abuse of power.
Giving yourself special privileges irrelevant of your duties is abuse of power.
Oh, and editing someone's (perfectly within the rules) post and banning them for no reason other than the fact that what they said is something you disagree with? Abuse of power. ;)
When precisely did this place become a dictatorship? Last I heard it was a place to come and express yourself and interact with others. Sorry if that doesn't fit some of our personal views of a utopia, but it's the human condition. Learn to deal with it.
There was a post on a forum that I read a quite while ago which was a response to a person who complained about free speech on a forum. I think it went like this...
The constitution of the United States says you may have the right to free speech. However, this forum is owned by <Whatever the owner's name was> and the property of <Owner's name here> and you will respect the rules which you must obey when you use the forum. If you don't wish to obey you are free to leave or you will be given the proper punishment for the crime.
I can't remember the exact post but I remember the idea behind it... "This board is owned by <owner>, he is free to enforce whatever rule he wants in it. If you don't like it then leave." Swearing isn't allowed because even if you need to be 13 to register an account, you could still view the forum without an account. (That includes 7 year olds too)

I would have done the exact same thing as Mark, Andy.
Sigh... Skye would have gotten rid of me long ago if I wasn't fit for modship. Instead, he advanced me up to Admin. The reason you think I am "abusing my power" is because we are ALL sick of putting up with the rule breaking/trolling; and we don't have to. This is, after all, a forum dedicated to www.XGenStudios.com. We could, very easily, make this a place where the only topics/posts allowed are the ones DIRECTLY related to www.xgenstudios.com. Instead, we allow open discussions and encourage members to participate in a wiiiiiiiiiiiiii^10de variety of topics. All we ask for is that you follow the rules set by those who MODERATE the forums. And they arn't even strict rules! Jesus... Compared to some of the other boards, we are verrrry leniant. Give a person an inch, they take a mile. If you like it, great! If you don't, we are NOT holding a gun to your head and forcing you to stay. If you don't like it here... If you don't want to follow our rules... Click the X (usually) in the top right have of your screen.
See, I don't think people should leave because mods and admins are abusing their powers, 'specially for their own benefit. I think the mods should stop doing that, then we can all be happy. I have spent too much time at these forums to leave because someone is abusing their powers. I've done it once with Kerry.
Oh, and why did you say you were gonna ban me, and then didn't? Did you realize that it would've been an injust ban, just like the others, and like the WTC sig removal?
