I'm currently looking for a nice 5-string bass, and need some help. I'm looking for something with a nice punchy tone, 35" scale in the sub $1000 dollar range. I'm interested in seeing if you guys can give me any suggestions as to what to look into. Any help is appreciated.

I've tried a few five strings at my music shop over the last few weeks (I'm looking for a bass myself), and I've liked the Ibanez 5-strings. I can't remember any specific models off the top of my head, but I remember that I liked the tone on them, and the bass just felt good.

I'll edit with the model numbers tomorrow.

If you're already adding one, why not just get a 6-string?

If you want a punchy tone go for either the Esp B-405, (it's a 34" scale though) or pretty much any Schecter +$500.

A similarily related question: Left handed basses are in much shorter supply than right-handed (oh wow, really, what's new? XD). Does anybody have any reccomedations on a starter bass that, well, won't suck in the long run? I plan on using it for either metal or jazz. But I guess that also depends on the strings that I'm gonna get too.

mattz: If your budget is >$300, the GSR (http://www.zzounds.com/item--IBAGSR200FML) here is pretty decent. I'm not the hugest fan of STD pickups but it's still pretty dece.

Ooh, looks nice. Although I may run into the same problem as I do with guitar (knowing me, I'll probably just end up using a pick on the bass >_>)

I end up hitting the volume knob when strumming.
