I think it's fun for the most part, but it's very hard.

I do it occasionally. I got a new Birdhouse for Christmas. I went and got some custom griptape though. I think that a Birdhouse is best for a Goofy foot(Like me) and an Element or a Girl is best for a regular. But custom colored griptape definitely holds better than any griptape that comes with the board.

I skateboard a longboard around campus.

And the kind of deck, trucks, and wheels you want depends on your purposes. If you want to travel with the board, you want a wide, long deck, with large diameter wheels (trust me on that). If you want tricks, you want a smaller board that curves at both ends (trick board) with smaller wheels.

My board is a piece of garbage Wal-Mart board.

Seriously, when I ollie the trucks make an odd crack. And they cracked. In half. =/

The better you are at skateboarding, the more fun it is. I used to have an element deck, with element section wheels (52mm) with some venture superlite low trucks, and some industrial bearings. I no longer skateboard as I used to, I was decent but not great. I could Treflip and 360 heel. Those are some of the harder flip tricks, but I have not skated for a long time.

Me and my friends always used to be big skaters, but after my deck broke, I sorta gave it up.

Now after I got my Soap Shoes, I can do some sick combinations.

Bad advice is bad. First off, Birdhouse skateboards are OK, but they have little pop that wears out fast. Most of them are for vert... And they've become so popular because of Tony Hawk that everyone who doesn't know about skating wants one. It's like seeing someone walking down the street like they're a real original gangster in Gap clothes. Regular and goofy boards don't exist, since boards are vertically symmetrical and both regular and goofy stances use the same tail.

The "custom" colored griptape generally sucks, too. It starts with too much grip, and all the particles on top just fall off. They only last about 1/2 the time regular black grip does, and seeing as beginning skaters don't wreck/crack/break their board from doing tricks off of stuff, you'll want the grip to last awhile.

I have two decks, a Krooked Zipzinger for getting around and an Element for trickazizzling. The Zipzinger has venture trucks, Reds bearings, and Cadillac wheels. If you aren't going to do tricks, I highly recommend a similar setup. It rides smooth and fast, and when I bomb some miniature hills (I'm too much of a loser to go down 90° drops) it feels like I'm floating. The Element also has Ventures and Reds, and some wheels I forgot the name of (had um since I was 10).

Now, for the actual deck components you should consider getting...

For a deck, you should just ask the guy at the store for what has good pop. You can try out your friend's boards to see what width you like, but generally: The wider it is, the harder it is to flip, but the more stabile it is while riding. Choose one with a good graphic unless you don't care, because the deck will last you a few months. I'm really not experienced enough to recommend one company.

I've had two kinds of trucks, Ventures and Thunders. The Thunders are OK but they seem less responsive than Ventures. I'd recommend Ventures since they're reliable and good for turning.

For bearings, there's two options. You can go cheap and get some Red's for 12-15 bucks. This is the way I go, and they work magnificently. I ride in the rain and they don't get rusted (but if you care about your belongings, don't, it ruins the wood that makes up the deck and makes it more fragile, with less pop) and they're just high quality. The second option is to pay 45 dollars for some Bones Swiss bearings. I've never tried these, but they're from the same company so they have to be good. I would stay away from Lucky's, they are weaker and don't spin half as long as reds from the start.

If you want soft, big wheels, for riding around, get those. You can't do powerslides but they're smooth and are good on your feet. For tricks, get smaller, hard wheels. They're lighter and supply a better pop for lack of shock absorption.

Just keep the grip tape that comes with the board. If none does, strive for Mob, it's the best, and only like 5 bucks.

I think World Industries decks work pretty good. I wish I didn't sell mine.

By the way, a real skaters shoes should never last over 3 months.

I don't skate but I do own a board with an Element deck, some company I forgot's rasta-colored trucks, Almost wheels and Bones Swiss bearings.

But yeah, I never use it because skating is too frustrating for me.

I've had my Soaps for about a month and the grind plates are nearly cracked.

As well, your shins should be naturally colored green and brown.

*1: Mine seems to pwn. I can pop higher than my friends, who have different boards. It hasn't weared for about a year. I skate street.

*2: blol.

*3: No, they don't, but some decks are better suited for more weight on the tail or nose. When skating, usually the right foot is pushing down with more weight, but that may just be me.

*4: Mine's lasted quite awhile. I agree, it was to grippy at first, and some particles did fall off, but it made the grip way better. But it really depends where you get it.

**1: Hmm... Well, the ones I tried had little to no pop... Oh well.

**2: LQTM

**3: Ah, but you see, goofy and regular riders both put their back foot on the same tail. It's just what foot you put on it. And unless goofy people place more weight than... Ugh, I'm just confusing myself. >.> Whatever, I just don't think it matters :>

**4: The kind I tried sucked :P What brand did you get? I think my friend's was Negative One.

My deck's pretty sick. Just built it. It has spitfire wheels, sawblade bearings, destructo trucks, iron horse griptape, and my own Disturbed graphic on the bottom, based off the band member's likenesses on their first CD, "The Sickness". It was better than the pile-o crap Birdhouse that I had before, which was like shorter than a 6 year-old dwarf. Rides smooth, controls great.

That still makes you better than 80% of the freakin' wannabe 'sk8ter' punks that hang out near where my group does on Fridays. They act like they're so amazingly cool because they have skateboards... the morons bail on ollies more than half the time.

They've got some stunt biker friends that are pretty good, though.
