The Dillinger Escape Plan : Thoughts?

Just heard them for the first time. Anyone else know about them? I really don't know what I think.

They're metal-y enough, but there's just something odd about their music.

I'm definitely not a fan of them. To me, their songs seem to have no melody and no direction to them at all, and there always seems to be something missing whenever I listen to them for some reason...

I haven't listened to much of them specifically, but I've heard good things about them.
Their kind of metal plays more on the dissonance and irregularity of the music rather than predictable, melodic qualities, I think. Good in smaller doses.
It's a bit the same with heavier stuff, like tech death metal - the musicianship is amazing and most of the bands have some pretty sick riffs and sounds tucked away in their records, but it's really hard to listen to for long periods of time; it starts to grate on the ears after a while.

I lurv 'em. Check out Calculating Infinity, it's far superior to Miss Machine (which is OK) and the new album Ire Works (which is, IMO, a total failure). The musicians are very technically proficient, but truth be said I'd like to hear the band without the screaming vocals, but then again, I'm especially gaga for instrumental music, so maybe someone else enjoys the vocals. Anywho, Calculating Infinity is one of the fathers of all technical metal, including mathcore and tech death metal, so every metal fan should check the album out.

First thoughts, not a fan of screaming, but they have a decent balance, sort of like SoaD. I will be looking up more stuff by them... later >.> after i get this essay written :(

Unretrofied is ####. Listen to the Calculating Infinity album, that's the DEP the world came to love.

Late-ass reply, but...

I dl'd all 3 albums, and on most youtube pages, people are saying the EP w/ Mike Patton was their best, alongside with Calculating Infinity.

So, def' check those out - Calculating Infinity is quite nice. I like the other two less.
