I taught myself, it's a brilliant method.

Just learn how to read tabs + learn some chords (google chord charts or something) and there you go.

I taught myself for a year, but now I started taking lessons and... I'm mad at myself for not doing so earlier. There's so much catching up to do... Sure, you can be good self-taught, but you can never be great.

Also, ninjaworrior or whatever, just take lessons in real life. You'll get actual feedback on what you're doing right and what you're doing wrong.

Yeah, MM is completely right. Teaching yourself is fine, but if you just learn chords and tabs, than if you ever form a band with others who have taken lessons than they will get mad at you for not being able to read music.

Also, I found that it was really hard to teach myself timing, although I was probably better off than people who never played any other instruments before because i had played a little keyboard and trumpet before i started guitar.
