In Defend your Castle description on XGen's website, it say's

"Attacks come at dawn. The Barbarian invaders arrive in relentless waves until nightfall, when they return to their camp... or sleep in your castle, if you are not capable of defending it. Luckily, however, the game provides a few other tricks up your invisible sleeve. For instance, the capability to convert enemy troops into soldiers to help you defend your walls. You can also purchase upgrades and repairs for your castle, and miraculously, they can be administered overnight, while the barbarian hordes are snoring in their camps!" - XGen

Barbarian? I thought they were villagers, as said in the start video of Pillage the Village: "Father, why do the villagers hate us so?" - The young hand

Well, just putting that out there, just to think about. SO JUST KEEP PLAYING THE GAMEZ0rZ!

They WERE villagers, but they became barbarians when the hands decided to kill them?

But the young cursor/hand still called them villagers.

Also, the father hand is apparently the King Hand according to the sound files.

What, barbarians cant live in villages?

bar·bar·i·an
A member of a people considered by those of another nation or group to have a primitive civilization.
A fierce, brutal, or cruel person.
An insensitive, uncultured person; a boor. See Synonyms at boor.Another dictionary puts it as an adjective:

bar·bar·i·an
of or relating to a land, culture, or people alien and usually believed to be inferior to another land, culture, or people
lacking refinement, learning, or artistic or literary cultureBarbarian is just a term to denote a hostile or primitive group or person, mostly based on the viewpoint of another culture, as the definitions point out. One can live in a village and be a barbarian the same as one can be a scientist and a human. In fact, a synonym for barbarian is boor, and a synonym for boor is peasants. Where do all these live? Often in villages. The village in the game is quite primitive in fact, barbaric in nature.

So is it a plot hole? No, not at all. If this doesnt connect it enough for you, you can imagine perhaps that you pillaged this poor, simple people, who then grew wrathful and ended up storming your castle in a barbaric manner.

Its all a matter of understanding what the word actually means ;)

while the barbarian hordes are snoring in their camps!

Sounds to me when the villages were pillaged they built an army and revolted. Set up camps outside the castle.

Judging by the number of guys in DYC... I'd say we missed a LOT of villages, lol.

Who says you pillaged all the villages?

There are other villages. Maybe the knights were women? Never know.

Perhaps the women and children dont come out of the trap doors?

That would make sense. The women and children would've (hypothetically) escaped while the men fought the cursor.

The answer is simple: they are barbarian villagers
